Make one activity work for two ages

Take Counting Collections. A younger child can touch and count a small group one object at a time. An older child can organize a larger collection into tens, record it, and explain why regrouping makes the count easier.

How to keep the activity from becoming a craft with no learning

Use a four-question loop:

  1. Predict: What do you think will happen?
  2. Do: What did you change or measure?
  3. Notice: What actually happened?
  4. Explain: What evidence supports your idea?

A beautiful diorama can be fun, but the science appears when the child explains how each feature helps the animal live. A tall place-value tower is useful when the child can connect it to tens and ones.
