Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Go on a bug hunt! Look under rocks, near plants, and in the grass for insects. Count their legs, look at their colors, and draw what you find.

Steps

  1. Grab a magnifying glass and a notebook, then head outside. SAFETY: a magnifying glass can focus sunlight into a hot point that can burn skin or start a fire — hold it close to the bug, not angled at the sun, and never leave it sitting in the grass.
  2. Look carefully in the grass, under rocks (put them back!), near flowers, and on tree bark.
  3. When you find a bug, observe it together: 'How many legs? What color? Is it moving fast or slow?'
  4. Draw 2-3 bugs you found in your notebook.
  5. Talk about being gentle: we look but don't squish! Put rocks back where you found them. Wash hands after touching soil or bugs, and avoid fuzzy caterpillars, wasps, bees, ants, and spiders (some sting or bite).
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw the animal and sticker-tag one body part you noticed.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Conduct an insect survey! Search different habitats (grass, soil, bark, flowers), count and identify insects, and record findings in a field journal.

Steps

  1. Bring a magnifying glass, journal, and pencil outside.
  2. Search 3 different micro-habitats: under a rock, in grass, near flowers.
  3. For each insect found, draw it and record: number of legs, color, size, where found.
  4. Count total insects found in each habitat. Which had the most?
  5. Research one insect you found: what does it eat? Is it helpful to the garden?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Conduct a biodiversity survey: identify insect species, classify them by order (beetles, butterflies, ants, etc.), create detailed scientific drawings, and analyze habitat preferences.

Steps

  1. Learn the characteristics that define an insect: 3 body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), 6 legs, exoskeleton, usually wings.
  2. Survey 4 different micro-habitats for 10 minutes each. Use a field guide or identification chart to identify insects to the family level if possible.
  3. Create detailed scientific drawings of 5 insects. Label body parts: head, thorax, abdomen, antennae, legs, wings.
  4. Organize your data in a table: insect name, habitat found, estimated size, behavior observed.
  5. Create a bar graph showing number of insects found in each habitat. Which habitat had the most biodiversity?
  6. Write a biodiversity report: describe your methods, present your data, and explain why certain habitats support more insect life than others.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Design and conduct an entomological research project: study insect behavior, set up observation experiments, research insect ecology, and write a scientific research paper.

Steps

  1. Choose a research question about insect behavior: 'Do ants prefer sweet or salty food?' 'What time of day are pollinators most active?' 'Do insects prefer certain flower colors?'
  2. Design an experiment to answer your question. Define your hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable, and controls.
  3. Conduct your experiment over 3-5 days with repeated observations. Record detailed quantitative data.
  4. Research your insect's role in the ecosystem: pollination, decomposition, food chain position, impact on agriculture.
  5. Analyze your data: create appropriate graphs, calculate averages, and determine whether your results support your hypothesis.
  6. Write a full research paper: Title, Abstract (100 words), Introduction (background and hypothesis), Methods, Results (with data tables and graphs), Discussion (what do results mean? sources of error?), Conclusion, and References.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Learning objectives

  • Conduct multi-day field research with repeated observations and quantitative data collection

Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
