Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Hunt around the house for circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Put a sticker on each shape you find!

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Review 4 basic shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle. Draw each one.
  2. Give your child a sheet of stickers and go on a shape hunt!
  3. Walk room to room looking for shapes: clock = circle, window = rectangle.
  4. Put a sticker next to each shape found and name it together.
  5. Count how many of each shape you found.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw each shape you found on a shape-chart page.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Find 2D and 3D shapes around the house and yard. Record what you find on a checklist and describe the attributes (sides, corners).

Steps

  1. Create a checklist with shapes: circle, square, triangle, rectangle, oval, diamond, cube, sphere, cylinder.
  2. Hunt through the house and yard for each shape.
  3. When you find one, check it off and draw or write what object it was.
  4. For each shape, count the sides and corners (vertices).
  5. Challenge: find an object that has more than one shape in it (a house has a triangle roof and rectangle walls).
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Describe shapes by their attributes (sides, corners, faces)
  • Recognize composite shapes in everyday objects

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Hunt for geometric shapes including polygons, classify them by properties (parallel sides, right angles, lines of symmetry), and calculate perimeters of shapes you find by measuring.

Steps

  1. Create a field guide page with these shapes: pentagon, hexagon, octagon, parallelogram, trapezoid, rhombus.
  2. Hunt around the house and yard. When you find a shape, sketch it and measure its sides in centimeters.
  3. Classify each shape: Does it have parallel sides? Right angles? Lines of symmetry?
  4. Calculate the perimeter of at least 5 shapes you found by adding all side lengths.
  5. Create a poster comparing your shapes: organize them by number of sides, then by whether they have right angles.
  6. Write a paragraph explaining what properties make a square different from a rectangle, and what makes both different from a rhombus.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

  • Classify shapes by properties: parallel sides, right angles, symmetry
  • Calculate perimeter by measuring and adding side lengths

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Conduct a geometry survey of your environment: find and classify 2D and 3D shapes, calculate area and perimeter, explore angle measurement, and write a geometry field report.

Steps

  1. Create a geometry field journal with sections for 2D shapes, 3D shapes, and angles.
  2. Find at least 15 shapes around the house and yard. For each, record: name, number of sides/faces/edges, measurements.
  3. For 2D shapes, calculate both perimeter AND area. Use the formula length x width for rectangles, and base x height / 2 for triangles.
  4. For 3D shapes, identify the number of faces, edges, and vertices. Calculate surface area for at least 2 rectangular prisms (like a cereal box).
  5. Use a protractor (or estimate) to find 3 acute angles, 3 obtuse angles, and 3 right angles in your environment.
  6. Write a two-page geometry field report: describe your findings, include diagrams with measurements, and explain how geometry is used in architecture and design.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Learning objectives

  • Identify and measure acute, obtuse, and right angles in the environment
  • Analyze 3D shapes by faces, edges, and vertices and calculate surface area

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
