Count a collection of interesting objects: shells, buttons, toy cars, or stickers. Practice touching and counting each one carefully.

Steps

  1. Choose a fun collection: toy cars, shells, buttons, or pompoms.
  2. Dump them out and estimate: 'How many do you think there are?'
  3. Count together, touching each object and moving it to a 'counted' pile.
  4. Write the number down. Was your estimate close?
  5. Try grouping them: 'Can you make groups of 2?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw a circle for each object counted to make a tally picture.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Count large collections by making groups of 5 or 10. Compare your estimate to the actual count. Practice writing numbers to 50+.

Steps

  1. Choose a large collection (30-50 items): cereal pieces, LEGO bricks, pennies.
  2. Estimate how many there are and write it down.
  3. Count by organizing into groups of 10 (or 5 for smaller collections).
  4. Count the groups by 10s, then add any extras: '10, 20, 30, 31, 32!'
  5. Record the total. Compare to your estimate. How close were you?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Count large collections (100-500), organize by place value, practice rounding to the nearest 10 and 100, and explore large number estimation strategies.

Steps

  1. Gather a very large collection: a jar of beans, a bag of beads, or a box of paper clips (aim for 100-500 items).
  2. First, estimate the total. Strategy: count out 10, see how much space they take, then estimate how many groups of 10 fill the whole collection.
  3. Count by making groups of 10, then bundle 10 groups into groups of 100.
  4. Record the total using expanded form: 347 = 300 + 40 + 7.
  5. Round your count to the nearest 10 and to the nearest 100. Show both on a number line.
  6. If you split the collection equally among 3, 4, or 5 containers, how many would go in each? Are there remainders?
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Estimate and count very large collections using sampling methods, calculate percentages by sub-category, explore large number operations, and compare estimation techniques.

Steps

  1. Gather a very large collection (500+ items) or use something like a jar of mixed beans/beads with multiple colors.
  2. Use sampling to estimate: count a small scoop (1/10 of the jar), then multiply by 10 to estimate the total. Do 3 separate samples and average them.
  3. Count the actual total and calculate your percent error: |estimate - actual| / actual x 100.
  4. If the collection has mixed types, count each type and calculate what percentage each type represents.
  5. Perform operations with your numbers: if you had 5 jars this size, how many total? If each item weighs 0.5 grams, what is the total weight in grams? In kilograms?
  6. Write a comparison of estimation techniques: which was most accurate — the single sample, the 3-sample average, or your gut estimate? Why do scientists use sampling?
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
