Kitchen Volcano

Build a mini volcano from playdough and watch it erupt with baking soda and vinegar! Observe what happens and describe the fizzy reaction.

Materials and setup

Parent note

Set up on a tray or take this activity outside to contain the mess. Have towels ready for cleanup. Pre-measure baking soda for younger children. Food coloring can stain clothes, so use an apron or old shirt.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Build a mini volcano from playdough and watch it erupt with baking soda and vinegar! Observe what happens and describe the fizzy reaction.

Steps

  1. Shape playdough into a volcano around a small cup or bottle.
  2. Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda inside the volcano cup.
  3. Add a squirt of dish soap and a few drops of food coloring.
  4. Pour in vinegar and watch the eruption!
  5. Talk about what happened: 'It's fizzing! The two things mixed together made bubbles!'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Before/after drawing: sketch the bowl before mixing and after.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Conduct a volcano experiment and test variables. What happens with more vinegar? Less baking soda? Cold vs. warm vinegar? Record your observations!

Steps

  1. Build a playdough volcano around a small bottle.
  2. Run the basic eruption first: baking soda + vinegar + soap + food coloring.
  3. Now experiment! Try different amounts: 'What happens with double the vinegar?'
  4. Test warm vs. cold vinegar. Which erupts more?
  5. Draw your volcano and write or dictate observations for each experiment.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Investigate chemical reactions systematically: test multiple acid-base combinations, measure reaction rates, record quantitative data, and write a lab report.

Steps

  1. Learn the science: baking soda (base) + vinegar (acid) = carbon dioxide gas. That is what makes the fizz.
  2. Design an experiment testing 3 variables: (1) amount of baking soda (1 tsp vs 2 tsp vs 3 tsp), (2) type of acid (vinegar vs lemon juice vs orange juice), (3) temperature (cold vs room temp vs warm).
  3. For each trial, measure the height of the eruption using a ruler held next to the volcano. Record in a data table.
  4. Change only ONE variable at a time. Keep everything else the same (this is called a controlled experiment).
  5. Create a bar graph comparing eruption heights across your trials.
  6. Write a lab report with sections: Question, Hypothesis, Materials, Procedure, Results (with data table and graph), and Conclusion.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Explore the chemistry behind acid-base reactions: investigate pH, test household substances for acidity/alkalinity, design an optimized eruption, and explain the molecular reaction.

Steps

  1. Research acid-base chemistry: What is pH? What makes something an acid vs. a base? Write a paragraph explaining the pH scale (0-14).
  2. Create a pH indicator using red cabbage juice (boil red cabbage, strain the purple liquid). Test 8-10 household liquids: vinegar, lemon juice, baking soda solution, soap, milk, soda, etc.
  3. Record the color change for each substance and estimate its pH. Organize results on a pH scale diagram.
  4. Design the 'ultimate eruption': based on your pH experiments, which acid-base combination will produce the biggest reaction? Form a hypothesis and test it.
  5. Explain the chemical reaction in detail: NaHCO3 + CH3COOH → NaC2H3O2 + H2O + CO2. Identify each substance (reactants and products) and explain why CO2 gas causes the eruption.
  6. Write a full scientific paper: abstract, introduction (background on acid-base chemistry), methods, results with data visualizations, discussion of findings, and conclusion.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

  • Create and use a natural pH indicator for testing
  • Explain chemical reactions at a molecular level using chemical formulas
