Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Choose a favorite animal and build its home in a shoebox! Use natural materials, paper, and toy animals to create a habitat scene.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Choose an animal together: fish, bird, bear, etc.
  2. Talk about where that animal lives: 'Bears live in forests with trees and caves.'
  3. Use a shoebox as the scene. Paint or color the background (blue sky, green grass).
  4. Add natural materials: leaves, sticks, rocks, cotton ball clouds.
  5. Place a toy animal in the habitat and describe the home you built.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw the animal and sticker-tag one body part you noticed.

  • Name where a familiar animal lives (its habitat)
  • Understand that animals need specific environments to survive
  • Create a representation of a natural habitat using art materials

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Research an animal's habitat and build a detailed diorama. Include food sources, water, shelter, and other animals that share the habitat.

Steps

  1. Pick an animal and look at a picture book or kid-safe website to learn about its habitat.
  2. List what the animal needs: food, water, shelter, space.
  3. Build the diorama in a shoebox with detailed features: water source (blue paper), food plants, hiding spots.
  4. Add labels with the animal's name, habitat name, and key features.
  5. Present your diorama: tell someone 3 facts about why this animal lives here.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Research a biome, build a detailed diorama with multiple species and a food chain, and write an informational report about the ecosystem.

Steps

  1. Choose a biome: rainforest, desert, tundra, coral reef, grassland, or deciduous forest.
  2. Research the biome: climate (average temperature and rainfall), at least 5 animals, at least 5 plants, and any unique features.
  3. Build a detailed diorama showing the biome with multiple species in their correct positions (canopy, understory, ground level for a rainforest).
  4. Create a food chain for your biome: show at least 4 organisms from producer → primary consumer → secondary consumer → top predator.
  5. Label everything in your diorama and add a key explaining symbols or colors used.
  6. Write a one-page informational report about your biome: describe the climate, key species, food web, and any threats (deforestation, climate change, etc.).
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Design and build a comprehensive ecosystem model with food webs, energy pyramids, and human impact analysis. Write a persuasive essay about conservation for your chosen ecosystem.

Steps

  1. Choose a specific ecosystem (e.g., Great Barrier Reef, Amazon Rainforest, Yellowstone, Arctic tundra).
  2. Research in depth: identify at least 10 species, their roles (producer, consumer, decomposer), and their interrelationships.
  3. Build a detailed 3D model or diorama. Include labels, a food web diagram (not just a chain — show interconnections), and an energy pyramid showing how energy decreases at each trophic level.
  4. Research human impact on this ecosystem: pollution, habitat destruction, climate change, invasive species. Find at least 3 specific examples.
  5. Write a persuasive essay (3-5 paragraphs) arguing for the conservation of this ecosystem. Include: specific threats, why the ecosystem matters globally, proposed solutions, and a call to action.
  6. Create an infographic summarizing key data about your ecosystem: species count, area, threats, and conservation status.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
