Turn an Old iPhone or iPad Into a Kids' Learning Device (2026 Guide)

Most families have one: an old iPhone or iPad in a drawer, replaced two upgrades ago, too outdated to sell for much and too functional to throw away.

It can become the single most useful piece of homeschool equipment you own.

The idea: wipe the device, install one offline-capable learning platform, download the content, then turn off WiFi and cellular entirely. Hand it to your child. Learning is now the only thing the device does — not because you've blocked everything else, but because everything else needs a connection and there isn't one.

Why this beats screen-time controls

Parental controls and content filters are an ongoing negotiation. You configure them, your child finds an edge case, you configure more. Screen-time limits get argued with. Blocklists get out of date.

Cutting the connection isn't a control — it's a fact about the device. There's no YouTube to block because YouTube has nothing to load from. No app store, no browser, no messages, no recommendation algorithm. The child isn't being restricted so much as handed a different kind of object: something closer to a Nintendo DS or a LeapPad than a phone.

It also removes the thing that makes screen time feel bad. When the alternative on the device is nothing, thirty minutes of learning isn't a compromise.

The setup

1. Wipe the device. On iOS: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. Set it up fresh. Skip signing into iCloud with your main account if you'd rather keep photos and messages off it entirely.

2. Install the learning platform. Open Safari (or Chrome on Android), go to the platform, sign in, and add it to the Home Screen — on iOS that's the Share button → Add to Home Screen. This step matters more than it looks: an installed home-screen app gets substantially better offline storage behaviour than a regular browser tab, particularly on iOS.

The recommended Travel Mode bundle is about 2.95 GB across 8 packs. If your old device is short on space, start with Core Starter plus Lesson Narration and add the rest as room allows — the National Parks Vault is the one to skip first.

4. Rehearse before you cut the cord. There's a built-in Test Airplane Mode check in the parent dashboard that verifies the service worker, storage headroom, and cached files. Run it while still on WiFi. Then open a lesson, a game, a 3D lab, and an art activity once each while online — this warms the cache for those surfaces.

5. Turn off connectivity. Settings → WiFi → off. Settings → Cellular → off. Or just switch on Airplane Mode, which does both. Relaunch the app from the home screen and confirm everything still opens.

6. Optional: lock it to one app. iOS Guided Access (Settings → Accessibility → Guided Access) locks the device to a single app until a PIN is entered. Combined with no connectivity, this is about as close to a purpose-built learning device as a phone gets.

What your child can actually do on it

Offline, with no connection at all:

At a lesson a day, the lessons alone run about three years. This is not a stopgap for a flight.

The honest caveats

Storage is the real constraint, not age. A very full device can fail on the larger packs regardless of how new it is. Check free space before you start — you want roughly 3 GB clear for the full bundle.

iOS storage quotas are unpredictable. Safari's limits vary by device and iOS version, which is exactly why the home-screen install in step 2 matters. Occasionally a large pack fails on a device that looks like it has room; the fix is dropping the National Parks Vault.

You'll want to reconnect occasionally. Not for learning — that works indefinitely — but to sync progress to the parent dashboard and pick up new content. A few minutes on WiFi every week or two is plenty. Do it when the child isn't holding the device.

This isn't a substitute for supervision. It removes the worst outcomes, not the need to know what your child is doing.

Not everything works offline. Anything genuinely live — a video class, a multiplayer world — is out by definition. That's true of every platform, and it's why platforms built around live classes or shared worlds can't be used this way at all.

Does this actually work, or will kids find a way around it?

With no WiFi and no cellular, there's nothing to get around — the browser, app store, and YouTube have nothing to connect to. This is stronger than content filtering, which is an ongoing arms race with a motivated child.

How old can the device be?

Anything that runs a current browser and has roughly 3 GB of free storage for the full offline bundle. An iPad from several years ago is usually fine. Storage headroom matters more than processor speed.

How much content can you actually store offline?
