Animal Body Language & Behavior
Animals talk all the time — they just don't use words. A dog wags its tail high and loose when it is happy, but tucks its tail between its legs when it is scared. A cat holds its tail straight up like a pole to say hello, but puffs it up like a bottle brush when it is startled. A bird sings soft songs on a calm morning, but makes a sharp 'chip-chip-chip' alarm call when something dangerous is near. If you watch closely, you can understand exactly what they are feeling.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Steps
- Find a real animal to watch — a dog on a walk, a cat on a couch, a bird at a feeder — or watch a short video of one. Sit very still and just look for 2 minutes.
- Look at the tail first. Is it high or low? Moving fast or slow? Tucked in or sticking up? Point to it and say out loud what you see.
- Listen for any sounds. Is the animal quiet, chirping softly, barking, or making a sharp warning sound? What do you think that sound means?
- Match the signal to a feeling: happy, scared, calm, or excited. Say one sentence out loud: 'The dog's tail is wagging high, so I think it feels happy.'
- Draw the animal and its tail the way you saw it. Add a face on yourself in the corner showing the same feeling.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
- Draw the animal and sticker-tag one body part you noticed.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Scientists who study animal behavior have decoded dozens of specific signals. A dog bowing down with its front legs flat and its back end in the air is doing a 'play bow' — it is inviting another dog to play. A cat that slowly closes and opens its eyes at you is giving you a 'slow blink,' which researchers call a sign of trust. A rabbit that thumps its back foot hard on the ground is sounding an alarm to warn other rabbits. A dog that yawns when nothing is sleepy might actually be stressed. Today you will learn to recognize these real signals — and test your reading on a real animal.
Steps
- Look at or discuss pictures and short videos of these 5 signals: dog play bow, cat slow blink, rabbit foot thump, fluffed-up bird (cold or unwell), stress yawn in a dog. Practice naming each one and what it means.
- Watch a real animal or a longer animal video for 10 minutes. Try to spot at least 3 different signals — it doesn't have to be from the list; use any signal you can read.
- For each signal, write or dictate 3 things: what the animal did, what you think it meant, and why.
- Check one of your readings with a grown-up or a short web search. Were you right? Scientists often get it wrong the first time too — that's how they learn.
- Pick your favorite signal and draw the animal showing it. Label the body parts that gave the signal away.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Real animal behavior scientists use a tool called an ethogram — a list of every behavior an animal can do, checked off at regular time intervals. By tallying behaviors every 30 seconds for 10 minutes, a researcher can figure out what an animal actually spends most of its time doing — which is almost never what people guess. Jane Goodall used this exact method with chimpanzees, and it showed the world that chimps make tools, something no one believed before her data. Today you are going to use the same method.
Steps
- Choose one animal to observe for 10 minutes: a pet, a backyard bird, a squirrel, a fish, or an animal in a steady live cam or video. Whichever you pick, stick with that ONE animal for the full 10 minutes.
- Make an ethogram sheet with 5 behavior categories: REST (sleeping, lying still), ALERT (head up, looking around), SOCIAL (interacting with another animal or person), FEEDING (eating, drinking, chewing), PLAY (chasing, pouncing, bounding). Add a MISC column for anything that doesn't fit.
- Set a timer to chime every 30 seconds for 10 minutes — that is 20 checkpoints. At each chime, glance at the animal and put one tally mark in the category matching what it is doing at that exact moment.
- Count up your tallies. Which category won? Was it what you expected before you started? Many people guess 'play' for a pet and discover the answer is actually 'rest' by a huge margin.
- Write 3 sentences: the animal's dominant behavior, one thing that surprised you, and one new question your data made you want to answer.
- Optional: if you have time, do a second 10-minute session later in the day. Did the pattern change?

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
A real behavior experiment has five parts: a question, a clear hypothesis, defined variables, repeated trials, and an honest conclusion — including the things that could have thrown the results off, called confounds. Professional ethologists run studies on everything from whether crows recognize human faces to whether dogs can tell a happy tone from an angry one. Today you will design and run your own mini-experiment on an animal you know well — and you will think like a scientist about where your data could be wrong.
Steps
- Pick a testable hypothesis about one animal you have access to. Examples: 'My dog wags her tail faster when I say her name than when I say a stranger's name.' 'My cat comes when I shake the treat bag but not when I shake an empty bag.' 'The squirrel in the yard approaches peanuts faster than sunflower seeds.' Write it as an 'if/then' statement.
- Define your variables clearly: the independent variable (what you change between trials), the dependent variable (what you measure), and the controls (things you keep the same every trial — same location, same time of day, same tone of voice).
- Design a data sheet with columns for: trial number, condition, observation, and measurement. Plan for at least 10 trials — 5 of each condition if you are comparing two things. Randomize the order so you do not always do condition A first.
- Run the trials. Record every result honestly, including ones that surprise you or seem to contradict your hypothesis. Do not adjust numbers to look cleaner.
- Analyze the results: count or average the measurements for each condition. Did the data support your hypothesis, contradict it, or show no clear difference?
- Write a short conclusion with three sections: what the data showed, at least 2 confounds (things that might have affected your results even though they weren't your variable — hunger, time of day, the animal seeing you prepare), and one follow-up experiment you would run next.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
