Animal Tracks & Signs

Materials and setup

Parent note

Safety: NEVER put hands or sticks inside holes or burrows — could contain snakes, wasps, or scared animals that bite. Stay on trails and away from den openings. Do not approach or touch any wild animal, dead animal, scat (droppings), or bone (zoonotic disease, parasites). Wash hands thoroughly after the hunt. Check for ticks after time on trails. Apply sunscreen, bring water. Stay with your child in public parks. For the camera-trap step, place the phone somewhere safe and retrieve it during daylight. Reduced-mobility adaptation: track observation is fully accessible on paved or wide-dirt trails; parents can photograph finds that are off-trail and bring the image back. Measurement, mapping, species identification, and behavioral research all work from seated. Many wildlife preserves publicize their wheelchair-accessible trails.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
