Right outside your door, there are creatures living their entire lives — building homes, finding food, raising babies, and solving problems — in the same patch of ground you walk past every day. Most people never notice them. Scientists who notice them are called naturalists. Today you are a naturalist.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Most people never notice them. Scientists who notice them are called naturalists. Today you are a naturalist.

Steps

  1. Go to a window or step outside in the yard or on a porch. Before you look, try to be as still and quiet as a stone — animals come out when they don't hear humans.
  2. Wait and watch for 2 full minutes without talking. Count how many different sounds you can hear. Are any of them animals?
  3. Name every animal you can see or hear: birds, squirrels, insects, worms, butterflies, spiders. Even tiny ones count.
  4. Draw 2 animals you spotted. Try to draw exactly what they looked like — their color, their shape, how big they were.
  5. Ask a grown-up: 'Where do you think that animal sleeps at night? What does it eat?' Make a guess together. It's okay not to know — wondering is how science starts.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw the animal and sticker-tag one body part you noticed.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Here is something scientists discovered: if you watch birds at a feeder every morning at the same time, you'll often see the same individual birds arriving at the same time each day. How would you know it's the same bird? You'd have to look very carefully — maybe it has a bent feather, or a special marking. Watching carefully enough to recognize individuals is one of the first skills real wildlife biologists learn. Today you'll start collecting the data that makes patterns visible.

Steps

  1. Bring a piece of paper and a pencil outside. Make a tally chart with columns for: birds, insects, mammals (squirrels, rabbits), and other (spiders, worms, anything else).
  2. Move slowly and quietly through your yard or neighborhood for 15 minutes. Add a tally mark each time you spot an animal — even one you already counted, if you see it again.
  3. Count up each column. Which animal group had the most? Which had the fewest? Is that what you expected?
  4. Pick the most interesting animal you spotted. Draw it carefully — where exactly was it? What was it doing? Was it alone or with others?
  5. Ask: if you came back tomorrow at the same time, do you think you'd see the same animals? How could you find out?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Real wildlife biologists use a method called a transect survey: they walk the same path at the same time on multiple days, recording every animal they see. By comparing the data across days, patterns emerge — the same fox appears at 7am, the cardinals come only when no one is moving, the ants follow a specific trail to a specific crack. The data is what makes the pattern visible. You're not going to guess what lives in your yard. You're going to find out.

Steps

  1. Create a field journal with 3 pages, one per observation day. Each page has columns for: time, animal name, number spotted, behavior (eating, moving, resting, calling), and location.
  2. Observe for 15-20 minutes each day at the same time and same spot. Consistency is the scientific requirement — changing your time or location makes the data incomparable.
  3. Try to identify animals by species name using a field guide, the Merlin Bird ID app, iNaturalist, or a careful web search. 'Bird' is not good enough — what kind of bird?
  4. Sketch at least one animal per day with labels pointing to distinctive features: bill shape, coloring, size relative to something you know.
  5. After 3 days, write a summary report answering: What animals appeared most consistently? Did you see any of the same individuals? What patterns surprised you? What question does your data make you want to answer next?

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

In 1854, Henry David Thoreau began keeping a daily nature journal at Walden Pond. He recorded every bird, insect, plant, and weather event he observed — for years. When scientists reanalyzed his data 150 years later, they discovered it showed clear evidence of climate change: spring arrivals were shifting, species patterns were moving. Thoreau didn't know what his data would eventually prove. He just watched carefully and wrote honestly. That is what a field naturalist does. That is what you'll do this week.

Steps

  1. Observe your outdoor space for at least 15 minutes daily for 7 consecutive days. Record for each session: date, exact time, weather conditions (temperature, cloud cover, wind), every species observed, estimated numbers, behaviors (feeding, nesting, moving, calling), and any interactions between species you witness.
  2. Complete a detailed, labeled sketch of at least 3 different species across the week. Label identifying features precisely: not 'orange bird' but 'orange breast, black wings, approximately robin-sized.'
  3. Use at least 2 different resources — a field guide, iNaturalist, the Audubon Society website — to confirm your species identifications. Note where your sources agree and where they differ.
  4. Write a 1-page naturalist report analyzing your local ecosystem: What species form the most active part of your observation area? What food-web relationships can you infer from what you saw — for example, which animals seem to be hunting and which seem to be foraging? What habitat features — plants, water, shelter — seem to attract the most wildlife?
  5. Include a reflection section answering: Did your presence change animal behavior during the week? How did you attempt to minimize disturbance? What would you observe differently in a second week?

  • Maintain a rigorous 7-day scientific field journal with both quantitative (counts, time) and qualitative (behavior, interaction) data
  • Identify and classify local wildlife to species level using multiple verification sources
  • Analyze an ecosystem through inference, identifying food web relationships and habitat factors from observational data alone

Safety and evidence note

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
