Rock Cycle Kitchen
Explore rocks! Sort rocks by color, size, and texture. Then use crayons to make your own 'rocks' by pressing shavings together — just like how real rocks form!

Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Explore rocks! Sort rocks by color, size, and texture. Then use crayons to make your own 'rocks' by pressing shavings together — just like how real rocks form!
Steps
- Collect 8-10 rocks from outside. Look at each one carefully with a magnifying glass.
- Sort rocks by color, then by size, then by texture (smooth vs rough).
- Peel paper off old crayons and shave them into small pieces using a cheese grater (parent does this).
- Press the shavings together in your hands to make a crayon rock. Squeeze hard! This is like how sedimentary rocks form.
- Talk about it: 'Real rocks form when tiny pieces get pressed together over a long, long time!'
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
- Before/after drawing: sketch the bowl before mixing and after.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Learn the three rock types and model each one using crayon shavings. Press shavings for sedimentary, heat and press for metamorphic, and melt for igneous!
Steps
- Learn the three rock types: sedimentary (layers pressed together), metamorphic (changed by heat and pressure), igneous (melted and cooled).
- Shave crayons of different colors into small pieces (parent helps with grater).
- Sedimentary: layer different colored shavings in a stack and press firmly between wax paper with books on top.
- Metamorphic: wrap shavings in foil, press flat, and warm with a hair dryer until they start to soften and fuse. Press again with books.
- Igneous: place shavings in a foil cup and carefully melt in warm water or with a hair dryer (parent supervises). Let cool and harden.
- Compare your three rocks. How are they different? Draw and label each one.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Model the complete rock cycle using crayon shavings. Understand how rocks transform from one type to another through weathering, heat, pressure, and melting. Create a rock cycle diagram.
Steps
- Research the rock cycle: rocks constantly change form. Igneous can weather into sediments, which compact into sedimentary rock, which can be heated into metamorphic, which can melt back into magma.
- Model each process with crayon shavings: (1) Weathering: break a crayon rock into pieces. (2) Compaction: press pieces into layers (sedimentary). (3) Heat and pressure: wrap in foil, warm and press (metamorphic). (4) Melting: fully melt in a foil cup (magma/igneous when cooled).
- Take your igneous rock and start the cycle again: break it apart (weathering), press the pieces (sedimentary), heat and press (metamorphic).
- Collect real rocks from outside. Try to identify which type each one is. Look for layers (sedimentary), crystals (igneous), or swirled patterns (metamorphic).
- Draw a complete rock cycle diagram with arrows showing every transformation path. Label each process (weathering, erosion, compaction, heat, pressure, melting, cooling).
- Write a paragraph explaining the rock cycle in your own words, referencing your crayon models as evidence.

Steps
- Complete the crayon rock cycle and photograph each stage. Create a side-by-side comparison with real rock samples if available.
- Research rock identification tests: Mohs hardness scale (scratch test using fingernail, penny, nail, glass), acid test (vinegar fizzes on limestone/chalk), luster, streak, and cleavage/fracture.
- Collect at least 10 rocks and test each one. Record: color, luster, hardness, acid reaction, texture, and your identification.
- Research how the rock cycle connects to plate tectonics: subduction zones create metamorphic rocks, volcanoes create igneous rocks, weathering of mountains creates sedimentary rocks.
- Create a geological cross-section drawing showing where each rock type forms in Earth's crust and how plate movement drives the rock cycle.
- Build a rock and mineral field guide: include your rock samples (or photos), test results, identifications, and formation explanations. Add a section on how rocks are used by humans (granite countertops, limestone cement, marble sculptures).
