Get a real chrysalis, mealworm, or tadpole kit. Visit it every day for 2 weeks. Draw what you see. Watch a real life change happen.
Materials and setup
- butterfly chrysalis kit OR mealworm/beetle kit OR tadpole kit (mail-order)
- journal
- ruler
- camera or phone (optional)
How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Get a real chrysalis, mealworm, or tadpole kit. Visit it every day for 2 weeks. Draw what you see. Watch a real life change happen.
Steps
- With a grown-up, set up a butterfly chrysalis kit, mealworm/beetle kit, or tadpole kit (these are mail-order — order ahead).
- Place it in a safe spot you can see every day.
- Each morning, visit the kit. Look closely. Has anything changed?
- Draw what you see in your journal — even if it looks the same as yesterday.
- Talk about it with a grown-up: 'Today the chrysalis looks ___. Yesterday it looked ___.'
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
- Draw your plant at day 1 and day 7 side by side.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Same daily observation, plus name the major life-cycle stages and dictate one sentence per day about what's different.
Steps
- Set up the kit (butterfly, mealworm, or tadpole) and plan a 14-day observation.
- Each day, look at the organism and dictate ONE sentence about what's different from yesterday for a grown-up to write in your journal.
- Learn the major stages by name. For butterflies: egg, caterpillar (larva), chrysalis (pupa), adult butterfly. For frogs: egg, tadpole, froglet, adult frog. For mealworms: egg, larva (mealworm), pupa, adult beetle.
- Each day, point to where in the life cycle YOUR organism is right now.
- On day 14 (or when the adult emerges), draw the full life cycle on one big sheet of paper with arrows.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Keep a measurement journal. Record body length each day with a ruler, build a growth graph, and predict the day of emergence.
Steps
- Set up your kit and observe daily for at least 2 weeks.
- Each day, carefully measure the body length of your organism (caterpillar, mealworm larva, or tadpole) in millimeters using a ruler. Don't touch the organism — measure through the container if possible.
- Record the date, length, and any visible changes (color, movement, eating activity) in a data table.
- On graph paper, plot length on the y-axis and day on the x-axis. Connect the dots to make a growth curve.
- Look at your growth curve. Is it speeding up, slowing down, or steady? Use the curve to predict the day your organism will pupate or emerge as an adult.
- When emergence happens, compare your prediction to the real day. Were you close? Write 2-3 sentences about what your growth curve told you.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Build a full ethogram. Time how long the organism spends eating, resting, and moving. Research what speeds up or slows down metamorphosis. Write a 1-page sourced report.
Steps
- Set up your kit and plan a 2-3 week observation. Get a stopwatch or phone timer.
- Build an ETHOGRAM: a chart of behaviors. Pick categories that fit your organism — e.g., for a caterpillar: eating, resting, moving, molting. For a tadpole: swimming, resting, eating, surfacing.
- Three times a day for 2 weeks, do a 5-minute focal observation. Use the stopwatch to time how many seconds of those 5 minutes the organism spends in each behavior. Record in your ethogram chart.
- Each day also record temperature, light hours, and food provided.
- Research using at least one credible source (book, university extension website, or peer-reviewed article): What environmental factors (temperature, food availability, day length) speed up or slow down metamorphosis in your species? Take notes with the source URL or citation.
- Write a 1-page report with: (1) species and life cycle overview, (2) your ethogram findings with at least one chart or graph, (3) what you learned about what controls the timing of metamorphosis, and (4) at least one cited source.

Safety and evidence note
Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
