Steps

  1. Look at a leaf, flower petal, and piece of fruit with a magnifying glass. What do you see up close?
  2. Explain: 'Everything alive is made of teeny tiny pieces called cells, like building blocks!'
  3. Make a giant cell model with playdough: flatten a big circle (cell), add a small ball in the middle (nucleus).
  4. Add tiny playdough bits around the inside for other cell parts.
  5. Compare: 'A cell is like a tiny room with a brain in the middle that tells it what to do!'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Learning objectives

  • Use a magnifying glass to observe details not visible to the naked eye
  • Create a simple model of a cell with a nucleus

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Build a detailed cell model using household items and learn the parts of a cell. Compare plant and animal cells by building one of each.

Steps

  1. Learn cell parts: cell membrane (outer wall), nucleus (the brain), cytoplasm (the jelly inside).
  2. Build an animal cell in a zip bag: hair gel or clear gelatin (cytoplasm), a grape (nucleus), sprinkles (other parts).
  3. Build a plant cell in a small box: the box is the cell wall, a bag inside is the membrane, add the same parts plus green paper (chloroplasts).
  4. Compare your two cells: 'Plant cells have a wall and green parts. Animal cells are rounder and squishier.'
  5. Label each part with small flags made from toothpicks and paper.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Explore cells in depth: examine real plant cells under a magnifier or microscope, build detailed cell models with organelles, and learn how cells function as the basic unit of life.

Steps

  1. Peel a thin layer of onion skin and place it on a plate. Examine with a strong magnifying glass or microscope. Can you see individual cells? Draw what you observe.
  2. Research cell organelles: nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm, mitochondria (energy), chloroplasts (plants only), vacuole (storage), cell wall (plants only).
  3. Build a detailed cell model using a clear container, gelatin, and household objects: bouncy ball (nucleus), small candies (mitochondria), green buttons (chloroplasts), water balloon (vacuole).
  4. Create a labeled diagram comparing plant and animal cells side by side. List at least 5 organelles for each.
  5. Write an analogy: 'A cell is like a ___' (factory, city, school). Explain which organelle matches each part of your analogy.
  6. Research: how big is a cell? Most are 10-100 micrometers. Calculate how many cells could fit across a penny.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Conduct a comprehensive cell biology study: prepare and examine cell slides, compare cell types across organisms, understand cell division basics, and create a cell biology presentation.

Steps

  1. Prepare cell samples for observation: onion skin cells, Elodea leaf cells (from a pet store aquarium plant), and cheek cells (gently scrape inside of cheek with a toothpick, place on slide).
  2. Examine each under magnification. Draw detailed diagrams of each cell type, labeling all visible structures. Note differences in shape, size, and visible organelles.
  3. Research cell organelles in depth: nucleus (DNA storage), mitochondria (cellular respiration), ribosomes (protein building), endoplasmic reticulum (transport), Golgi body (packaging). Create a function chart.
  4. Learn about cell division (mitosis): cells grow and split into two identical copies. Draw the basic stages: interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase.
  5. Research specialized cells: red blood cells, nerve cells, muscle cells, root hair cells. How does their shape relate to their function?
  6. Create a presentation or poster covering: cell theory, organelle functions, plant vs. animal cells, cell division, and specialized cells. Include your own cell drawings.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
