Lie on a big paper and trace your body! Feel your skull, ribs, and spine — then glue paper bones in the right spots.

Steps

  1. Lie down on a large piece of paper and have a parent trace your body outline.
  2. Feel your own body: find your skull, ribs, spine, arm bones, and leg bones.
  3. Cut out simple bone shapes from white paper and glue them onto your body outline in the right places.
  4. Point to each bone area and name it together: skull, ribs, spine, arms, legs.
  5. Wiggle different body parts and talk about how bones help you move: 'Your skeleton holds you up like a frame!'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Explore three body systems: skeleton, muscles, and digestion. Build a life-size body poster with bones, muscles, and a digestive tract using craft materials.

Steps

  1. Trace your body outline on large paper or tape together newspaper sheets.
  2. Draw or glue white paper bones for the skeleton: skull, spine, ribs, arm and leg bones, hands, and feet.
  3. Add red paper strips for muscles on top of the bones: biceps, leg muscles, and stomach muscles.
  4. Create the digestive system with yarn: mouth to throat, down to stomach (paper bag), through intestines (coiled yarn).
  5. Label each system with a different color: blue labels for bones, red for muscles, green for digestion.
  6. Present your body poster and explain what each system does.
  7. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Build detailed models of three body systems and learn how they work together. Create a functioning digestive system model and test how muscles and bones create movement.

Steps

  1. Research the skeletal system: identify 15 major bones. Build an arm model using cardboard tubes (bones), brass fasteners (joints), and string (tendons).
  2. Research the muscular system: learn about biceps and triceps as opposing pairs. Pull the strings on your arm model to show how muscles move bones.
  3. Build a digestive system model: use a zip bag for the stomach (add crackers and soda to simulate digestion), a tube for the esophagus, and a stocking for intestines.
  4. Run food through your digestive model and observe how it changes at each stage.
  5. Create a diagram showing how all three systems work together when you eat: teeth crush food (skeletal), tongue pushes food (muscular), stomach digests (digestive).
  6. Write a report explaining each system and how they depend on each other.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Conduct an in-depth study of human body systems including skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, and respiratory. Build working models, measure your own body data, and create a comprehensive body systems guide.

Steps

  1. Research five body systems: skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, and respiratory. Create a fact sheet for each with key organs, functions, and fun facts.
  2. Build a working arm model demonstrating antagonistic muscle pairs (biceps/triceps) using cardboard, rubber bands, and string. Show flexion and extension.
  3. Measure your own body data: resting heart rate, heart rate after exercise, breathing rate at rest vs. after exercise, wingspan vs. height comparison.
  4. Create a digestive timeline: research how long food spends at each stage (mouth: 30 seconds, stomach: 2-4 hours, small intestine: 4-6 hours, large intestine: 12-36 hours).
  5. Draw a full-body diagram showing all five systems with color-coded labels. Add arrows showing connections between systems (e.g., blood carries nutrients from digestive to muscles).
  6. Write a comprehensive body systems guide explaining each system and their interdependencies. Include your measurement data and models as evidence.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
