Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Mix things up in the kitchen lab! Explore what happens when you combine baking soda and vinegar, mix colors, and dissolve sugar.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Do this part in a well-ventilated kitchen (fan on or window cracked — the fizz is harmless CO2, but a quick air swap keeps the smell mild). Put baking soda in an open bowl. Slowly pour vinegar on it. What happens? (Fizz!)
  2. Mix food coloring: red + blue = ? Red + yellow = ? Blue + yellow = ?
  3. Stir sugar into warm water. Watch it dissolve. Where did it go?
  4. Try mixing oil and water. Do they mix? Shake them up. What happens?
  5. Talk about it: some things mix together and some don't. Some make new things happen!
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Before/after drawing: sketch the bowl before mixing and after.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Be a kitchen scientist! Test whether substances are acids or bases, explore states of matter, and create simple chemical reactions.

Steps

  1. Make a pH indicator: boil red cabbage in water (parent does this). The purple juice changes color with acids and bases!
  2. Test household liquids: lemon juice, baking soda water, soap, vinegar. Which are acids (turn pink)? Bases (turn green)?
  3. Explore states of matter: ice (solid), water (liquid), steam (gas). Watch ice melt and water boil.
  4. Make 'oobleck': mix cornstarch and water. Is it a solid or liquid? (It's both!)
  5. Record your experiments in a science journal with drawings.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Study chemical reactions vs. physical changes, the properties of matter, and conservation of mass. Design your own experiments.

Steps

  1. Learn the difference: physical change (reversible, like ice melting) vs. chemical change (irreversible, like baking a cake).
  2. Classify 10 changes as physical or chemical: tearing paper, rusting metal, dissolving salt, burning wood, freezing juice.
  3. Test conservation of mass: weigh baking soda and vinegar separately, then combine them inside a SEALED zip-top bag and weigh again. The mass stays the same — matter is conserved. Now try it OPEN in a cup: the mass appears to decrease because CO2 gas escapes into the air. The atoms are still there; they just left the cup as gas.
  4. Investigate mixtures vs. solutions: mix sand and water (mixture) vs. salt and water (solution). Can you separate each?
  5. Design your own experiment to test a chemistry question. Write hypothesis, procedure, results, and conclusion.
  6. Create a 'Chemistry Safety Rules' poster for your kitchen lab.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Explore atoms, molecules, the periodic table basics, and chemical formulas. Investigate endothermic and exothermic reactions and pH in depth.

Steps

  1. Research atomic structure: protons, neutrons, electrons. Draw a model of hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon atoms.
  2. Learn that molecules form when atoms bond: H2O (water) = 2 hydrogen + 1 oxygen. Model 5 common molecules with clay balls and toothpicks.
  3. Explore the periodic table: find 10 elements in everyday objects (iron in nails, copper in pennies, aluminum in foil).
  4. Investigate an endothermic reaction: baking soda + vinegar. Put a thermometer in a small bowl of vinegar, record the starting temperature, then stir in a spoonful of baking soda. Watch the temperature DROP as the reaction absorbs heat from its surroundings — that is what 'endothermic' means. Record the lowest temperature and the total drop. SAFETY: this reaction produces carbon dioxide (CO2) gas — always do it in an open bowl, NEVER in a sealed bottle or closed container (trapped gas can build pressure and burst the container). Do the reaction in a well-ventilated area and keep your face away from the bubbling mixture.
  5. Create a detailed pH scale poster, testing 10 household substances and placing them on the scale.
  6. Write a lab report for your most interesting experiment following scientific format.
