Design a tiny garden! Choose 3 different seeds and DRAW where each one will go in a planter box or garden patch. This is about planning a garden, not just one seed.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Show the child seed packets for 3 different plants (e.g., carrots, lettuce, sunflowers).
  2. Talk about each plant: how tall it grows, how much room it needs, sun or shade.
  3. On a big piece of paper, draw a rectangle for the planter box or garden patch.
  4. Help the child draw and color where each seed will go: tall plants in the back, short ones in the front.
  5. Optional: actually plant the seeds in the planned spots in a window box or patch.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw your plant at day 1 and day 7 side by side.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Study plant parts and their jobs. Dissect a flower, examine roots, and learn how plants make their own food through sunlight.

Steps

  1. Learn 5 plant parts: roots (drink water), stem (transport), leaves (make food), flower (make seeds), seeds (grow new plants).
  2. Carefully pull a weed and examine the roots. Wash them and look closely.
  3. Dissect a real flower: gently pull apart petals, stamen, and pistil. Draw and label each part.
  4. Experiment: put a white flower in colored water. Watch the stem carry color to the petals over 24 hours.
  5. Draw a complete plant with all 5 parts labeled and their jobs described.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Investigate photosynthesis, plant adaptations, and life cycles. Design controlled experiments to test what plants need to thrive.

  1. Learn about photosynthesis: plants use sunlight, water, and CO2 to make sugar (food) and release oxygen.
  2. Design an experiment: plant 4 identical seeds. Give each different conditions (light vs. dark, water vs. dry). Predict outcomes.
  3. Observe and record growth data for 2 weeks. Which conditions produced the best growth?
  4. Study plant adaptations: cactus spines, deep roots in deserts, broad leaves in rainforests. Why did each adapt?
  5. Diagram the life cycle of a flowering plant: seed, germination, growth, flowering, pollination, seed production.
  6. Create a field guide page for 3 plants in your yard, including drawings, measurements, and habitat notes.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Steps

  1. Examine a plant cell under a magnifying glass (thin onion skin). Compare to animal cells. Draw and label: cell wall, chloroplast, vacuole.
  2. Investigate transpiration: cover a leafy branch with a plastic bag. Observe water droplets forming inside over several hours.
  3. Test phototropism: place a plant in a box with one hole for light. Document how the plant grows toward light over 1 week.
  4. Research genetic variation: why are there so many varieties of apples, tomatoes, or roses? How do farmers use selective breeding?
  5. Analyze the role of plants in an ecosystem: producers, oxygen creators, habitat providers, soil anchors. Create a food web diagram.
  6. Write a scientific research paper on a plant topic of choice, including hypothesis, methods, data, and conclusions.
