Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Observe the weather every day! Learn weather words (sunny, cloudy, rainy, windy) and dress a paper doll for the weather.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Look outside together. Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy today?
  2. Learn weather words with picture cards: sun, clouds, rain, snow, wind.
  3. Create a weather chart. Each day, draw the weather symbol for that day.
  4. Dress a paper doll for today's weather. Would you need a coat? Sunglasses?
  5. At the end of the week, count how many sunny days, cloudy days, etc.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.
  7. Draw today's sky in a weekly weather journal.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Build a simple weather station. Measure temperature, observe clouds, and track weather patterns over a week.

Steps

  1. Read an outdoor thermometer together. Is it hot, warm, cool, or cold?
  2. Learn 3 cloud types: fluffy cumulus, flat stratus, wispy cirrus. Which do you see today?
  3. Make a wind sock from a paper towel tube and streamers. Hang it outside.
  4. Record daily data for 5 days: temperature, cloud type, wind (calm/breezy/windy), precipitation.
  5. At the end of the week, look for patterns: did cloud types predict rain?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Study the water cycle, severe weather types, and climate vs. weather. Build weather instruments and make forecasts.

  1. Model the water cycle in a bag: tape a sealed bag with water to a sunny window. Observe evaporation, condensation, and precipitation over 2 days.
  2. Build a rain gauge from a plastic bottle. Measure rainfall for a week.
  3. Research severe weather: thunderstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards. What causes each?
  4. Make a 3-day weather forecast based on current conditions and cloud observations. How accurate were you?
  5. Explain the difference between weather (daily) and climate (long-term patterns).
  6. Create a weather safety poster: what to do during each type of severe weather.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

  1. Collect weather data for 2 weeks: temperature, humidity, barometric pressure (if available), wind direction, precipitation. Create charts.
  2. Study air masses and fronts: how do cold fronts and warm fronts create different weather? Draw cross-section diagrams.
  3. Map world climate zones: tropical, dry, temperate, continental, polar. What factors determine each zone?
  4. Analyze historical weather data for your area: how have average temperatures and precipitation changed over 50 years?
  5. Research one impact of climate change on weather patterns. Write an evidence-based paragraph.
  6. Design a weather presentation: share your 2-week data analysis with graphs, forecasts, and climate context.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
