Materials and setup

Parent note

Safety: check the digging spot first for broken glass, rusty metal, animal droppings, and nearby poison ivy/oak. Don't dig near roadsides (contaminated soil). Wear closed-toe shoes. Use gardening gloves if you have them, especially for older kids handling larger soil samples. Watch for biting/stinging insects (fire ants, yellow jackets, spiders — black widow has red hourglass, brown recluse is shiny brown). Wash hands thoroughly after digging — soil can contain tetanus bacteria, parasites, and animal waste. For the bake-soil-in-oven step (upper-elementary), parent handles the oven entirely; smoke alarm may trigger — ventilate. Apply sunscreen, bring water. Stay with your child in public parks. Reduced-mobility adaptation: parent can bring soil samples in cups or jars to a seated child for sedimentation tests, magnification, sifting, and texture analysis — all seated-accessible. The soil-food-web research, texture triangle classification, and agricultural assessment are desk-based.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
