Find water in nature! Look for puddles, streams, ponds, dew on leaves, and listen for the sound of water.

Parent note
CRITICAL WATER SAFETY: drowning is silent and fast — even 2 inches of water is a risk for young children. Hold your child's hand at all times near any water source (stream, pond, fountain, drainage ditch). Do NOT let children wade into unknown water (hidden currents, slippery rocks, broken glass, sharp debris, bacteria). No water activity during or after heavy rain (flash flood risk even in normally-dry creek beds). Wash hands thoroughly after touching any water or water-edge plants/animals (giardia, E. coli, leptospirosis risk in natural water). Never drink untreated water. Apply sunscreen, bring drinking water. Stay with your child at all times near water — this is the highest-drowning-risk scavenger hunt in the set. Reduced-mobility adaptation: observe from safely back from the water's edge; a parent can bring small water samples in a clear jar to the child for sedimentation, temperature, and clarity observation. Macroinvertebrate photography and identification can be done from images taken at the water by the parent. The watershed mapping, conservation calculations, and reporting work are all desk-based.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
