Materials and setup

Parent note

Safety: NEVER touch mushrooms (some are deadly even to skin contact in rare cases, and impossible for a child to tell safe from unsafe) — photograph from a few inches away. NEVER touch or eat wild berries. Don't handle feathers (disease risk). Never look directly at the sun. Stay away from bees/wasps. Apply sunscreen, bring water. Stay with your child in public parks. For the chromatography experiment (upper-elementary), rubbing alcohol is toxic — adult-supervised only, away from mouth and eyes. Reduced-mobility adaptation: color hunting is fully wheelchair-accessible. A parent can gather a mini color palette from nearby and bring items to the child for the color-wheel arrangement. Photography, pie chart data analysis, chromatography, and pigment research are all seated-accessible.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
