Seed Scavenger Hunt

Find seeds hiding in nature! Look for acorns, pinecones, dandelion puffs, and seeds inside fruits.

Materials and setup

Parent note

CRITICAL SAFETY: never let a child eat any wild berry, seed, or nut. Many common landscape plants (yew, holly, pokeweed, privet, nightshade, castor bean, laburnum) have berries or seeds that are toxic or deadly. Rule: LOOK, don't taste. For the 'seeds inside fruit' step, use store-bought produce only. Wash hands thoroughly after the hunt. For the dandelion seed-blowing step, some children have allergies — watch for sneezing/wheezing. Apply sunscreen, bring water. Stay with your child in public parks. Reduced-mobility adaptation: all seed collection can be brought to a seated child by the parent. The helicopter-drop experiment (maple spinners) can be tested from a balcony or the top of a staircase, with the seated child observing from a safe vantage. Germination cups on a windowsill, paper helicopter construction, weighing, and measuring are all desk-based.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Find 6+ different types of seeds. Sort them by how they travel: wind, water, animals, or gravity. Plant one to watch it grow!

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Study seed dispersal mechanisms. Collect 8+ seed types, classify by dispersal strategy, design seed dispersal experiments, and track germination.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
