Rock Collection Quest

Materials and setup

Parent note

Safety: watch for sharp edges, broken glass, and rusty metal — especially along paths, beaches, and old construction sites. Don't let children pick up chunks of broken concrete (can have rebar). For vinegar-fizz tests, kid-safe but supervise. Wash hands after handling rocks. Stay with your child in public areas — review stranger awareness before leaving. Weather: skip this activity in extreme heat (rocks on pavement can burn hands) or when storms are forecast. Reduced-mobility adaptation: fully wheelchair-accessible on paved trails and gravel shoulders. Parent can gather a small rock assortment from multiple nearby locations and bring them to the child for sorting, measuring, hardness-testing, and photography — all of which work from seated. Geological map drawing, streak testing (on a tile on a tray), and research steps are desk-based.

Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Collect 5-8 rocks and sort them by color, size, texture, and type. Create a rock display with labels.

  • Practice descriptive labeling and scientific naming

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Collect and classify 8+ rocks into the three rock types. Test hardness, observe crystal patterns, and create a rock identification chart.

  • Classify rocks into igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic categories
  • Conduct systematic hardness tests using the Mohs scale concept
  • Record and organize scientific observations in a data chart

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Conduct a geological survey. Identify rock types and minerals, explain their formation, map geological features, and connect findings to local geology.

Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
