Tree Detective
Go outside and find 3 different trees! Look at their leaves, feel the bark, and compare which is tallest.
Materials and setup

Parent note
Outdoor safety: check weather before heading out (no hunts in lightning, extreme heat, or high wind — falling branches are a real risk). Apply sunscreen and bring water for sunny days. Stay with your child the whole time in public parks — review stranger awareness before you leave. Do NOT let the child touch tree sap, fuzzy/hairy caterpillars (some species sting or cause rashes), or any mushrooms. Watch for poison ivy/oak/sumac — 'leaves of three, let it be.' Reduced-mobility adaptation: almost all observation work (leaf shape, bark texture photography, circumference measurement with a string) is wheelchair-accessible on paved park trails. For the height estimation and DBH measurement, a seated child with a parent holding the string works identically. Most accessible parks have paved loops — call ahead or check AllTrails/park websites for wheelchair-rated trails.
