Pour 1/2 cup and 1/4 cup of flour and see which one holds more. Use real measuring cups to feel how fractions work.

Steps

  1. Set out a 1/2 cup measuring cup and a 1/4 cup measuring cup.
  2. Pour flour (or rice) into the 1/2 cup until it is full. Pour it into a bowl.
  3. Now fill the 1/4 cup. Pour it into a different bowl.
  4. Look at the two bowls. Which one has more? Say it out loud: 'one-half is more than one-fourth.'
  5. Try it again: how many 1/4 cups does it take to fill the 1/2 cup? (Answer: 2.) Pour and count.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Measure 3/4 cup of flour by combining a 1/2 cup and a 1/4 cup. See that fractions add up to make bigger amounts.

Steps

  1. Set out a 1/2 cup, a 1/4 cup, and a mixing bowl.
  2. Fill the 1/2 cup with flour and pour it into the bowl. Fill the 1/4 cup with flour and pour it in too.
  3. Say out loud: 'one-half plus one-fourth equals three-fourths.'
  4. Now try to make 3/4 cup using only the 1/4 cup. How many times do you have to fill it? (Answer: 3.)
  5. Talk about it: both ways gave you 3/4 cup. Fractions can add up in different ways.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Triple a small recipe. Calculate the new amounts of 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, and 2/3 cup milk, then measure them out for real.

  1. Start with this recipe: 3/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 2/3 cup milk.
  2. You want to make 3 batches at once. Multiply each amount by 3.
  3. Flour: 3/4 x 3 = 9/4 cups. Convert to a mixed number: 2 and 1/4 cups. Show the work.
  4. Sugar: 1/2 x 3 = 3/2 cups = 1 and 1/2 cups. Show the work.
  5. Milk: 2/3 x 3 = 6/3 cups = 2 cups. Show the work.
  6. Now measure out the new amounts in a bowl using your measuring cups. Did your math match what fits in the bowl?
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Scale a 4-serving recipe to 9 servings. Compute every ingredient using a 9/4 multiplier and convert each result to a mixed number AND a decimal.

Steps

  1. Take a 4-serving recipe with at least 4 ingredients. (Pick one that uses fractions like 1/2, 3/4, 1/3.)
  2. Your scaling factor is 9/4 (because 9 servings divided by 4 servings).
  3. For every ingredient, multiply the amount by 9/4. Show the work as a fraction multiplication.
  4. Convert each answer two ways: as a mixed number (e.g., 2 and 1/4 cups) AND as a decimal (e.g., 2.25 cups).
  5. Some answers will be awkward. Round each decimal to the nearest 1/4 cup so you can actually measure it. Note any ingredient where rounding might change the recipe.
  6. Make a final shopping/measuring sheet for all 9 servings. If you can, actually cook the scaled recipe.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
