Round up toy animals into corrals (bowls or boxes) and count how many are in each group. Practice counting up to 10 with one-to-one correspondence.

Steps

  1. Set out 3 bowls or small boxes as 'corrals' and a pile of toy animals.
  2. Ask your child to put a specific number of animals in each corral: 'Put 3 horses in this one!'
  3. Count each animal together as they place them, touching each one.
  4. Compare groups: 'Which corral has the most? Which has the fewest?'
  5. Mix them up and try different numbers.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Sort animals into corrals by type, count each group, and record the numbers. Make a simple bar graph showing how many of each animal you have.

Steps

  1. Gather a mixed collection of toy animals.
  2. Sort them into groups by type (farm, jungle, ocean, etc.) in separate corrals.
  3. Count each group and write the number on a sticky note for each corral.
  4. Draw a simple bar graph on paper: one column per animal type, color in squares for each animal.
  5. Answer questions: 'How many more jungle animals than farm animals do we have?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Run a real toy-trading negotiation. Sort 47 toy animals by type, build a tally chart, and use ratios to plan a trade with a sibling that leaves both of you with the most variety.

Steps

  1. Pull together about 47 toy animals from your collection (stuffed animals, plastic figures, anything counts).
  2. Sort them into piles by type: dinosaurs, cats, dogs, dragons, and any other groups you have.
  3. Make a tally chart on paper. One row per type. Mark a tally for every animal and write the total at the end of each row.
  4. Trade rule with your sibling: for every 3 of your dinosaurs they get, they give you 1 dragon.
  5. Plan a trade that leaves BOTH of you with the most variety (the most different types). How many dinosaurs should you trade away? How many dragons do you get back?
  6. Write the trade as a number sentence and show what your tally chart looks like before and after.
  7. Explain your reasoning out loud: why is this trade fair? Why does it give both of you more variety than trading everything?
  8. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Design a full animal census study: collect multi-attribute data, calculate mean/median/mode, create multiple graph types, and write an analysis report with conclusions.

Steps

  1. Gather all available toy animals and record each one's type, estimated size (small/medium/large), number of legs, and habitat.
  2. Enter data into a hand-drawn spreadsheet with at least 5 columns.
  3. Calculate the mean, median, and mode for the 'number of legs' column.
  4. Create three different graph types from your data: bar graph, pie chart (estimate percentages), and a pictograph.
  5. Write a one-page analysis report: What is the most common habitat? What is the average number of legs? What patterns do you notice?
  6. Propose a hypothesis about real-world animal populations based on your toy data, and explain why toy collections might not represent reality.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
