Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Explore turns and corners! Open a book wide or just a little bit. Discover that doors, scissors, and your arms all make angles when they open and close.

Steps

  1. Open a book just a tiny bit. 'This is a small angle — a small opening!'
  2. Open it wider. 'Now it is a bigger angle!'
  3. Open it all the way flat. 'This is the biggest angle — completely open!'
  4. Find corners around the house: the corner of a book, a door frame, a table edge. 'Corners are angles!'
  5. Use your arms to make angles: arms close together (small angle), arms wide apart (big angle).
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Compare angles as bigger or smaller
  • Find angles (corners) in everyday objects

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Learn about right angles, and angles that are bigger or smaller than a right angle. Use a corner of a piece of paper as your right-angle checker.

Steps

  1. Show the corner of a piece of paper. 'This is a right angle — it is exactly square.'
  2. Hold the paper corner against different angles around the room. Does the room corner match? That is a right angle!
  3. If the angle is smaller than the paper corner, it is 'less than a right angle.' If bigger, it is 'more than a right angle.'
  4. Find and record: 5 right angles, 3 angles less than right, 3 angles more than right.
  5. Make angles with popsicle sticks or straws connected by a brad. Show right angles, small angles, and big angles.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Measure angles with a protractor and classify them as acute, right, obtuse, or straight. Find and measure angles in everyday objects and geometric shapes.

Steps

  1. Learn angle names: acute (less than 90 degrees), right (exactly 90 degrees), obtuse (greater than 90 and less than 180 degrees), straight (exactly 180 degrees).
  2. Use a protractor to measure 8 angles drawn on paper. Classify each angle by name.
  3. Draw angles of specific sizes: 45 degrees, 90 degrees, 120 degrees, 180 degrees.
  4. Measure angles in real objects: the angle of a partially open door, an open book, a slice of pizza, a clock at 3:00.
  5. Explore: what do the angles of a triangle add up to? Measure all 3 angles of 3 different triangles and add them up. (Always 180!)
  6. Create an 'Angle Finder' tool from two paper strips and a brad. Use it to copy and compare angles around the room.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Master angle relationships: complementary and supplementary angles, vertical angles, angles in polygons, and angles formed by parallel lines cut by a transversal.

Steps

  1. Complementary angles sum to 90 degrees. If one angle is 35 degrees, what is its complement? Solve 5 problems.
  2. Supplementary angles sum to 180 degrees. If one angle is 110 degrees, what is its supplement? Solve 5 problems.
  3. Draw two intersecting lines. Measure all 4 angles. What do you notice about opposite angles? (They are equal — vertical angles.)
  4. Calculate missing angles in polygons: if a quadrilateral has angles of 90, 85, and 100 degrees, what is the fourth? (360 - 275 = 85 degrees)
  5. Draw two parallel lines cut by a transversal. Identify and measure corresponding angles, alternate interior angles. What patterns do you see?
  6. Solve 5 multi-step angle problems combining complementary, supplementary, and polygon angle relationships.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
