Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Set out a small pile of quarters (real or play). Show your child: '4 quarters make 1 dollar.'
  2. Set up a pretend stand on the table. Each cup of lemonade costs 1 quarter.
  3. A family member 'buys' a cup. Your child counts out 1 quarter and hands over a cup.
  4. Try a bigger order: 'I want 4 cups, here is a dollar.' Trade the dollar for 4 quarters and back again.
  5. Stack the quarters into groups of 4 and count how many dollars you 'earned' at the end.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Count up to 10 coins one at a time
  • Practice trading coins for goods in a pretend purchase

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Run a pretend lemonade stand with a parent as your customer. Take orders, count sales with simple addition, and tally how many cups you sold.

Steps

  1. Set up your stand with a sign: 'Lemonade $1 a cup.' Use play money or real coins.
  2. Parent walks up and orders. Sometimes 1 cup, sometimes 2. Count out the right change every time.
  3. Make a tally sheet on paper. Mark a tally for each cup sold.
  4. For 2-cup orders, add: '$1 + $1 = $2.' Say it out loud as you take the money.
  5. After 10 'customers,' count the tallies and count the money. Do they match?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Run a real or pretend lemonade stand with real costs. Calculate how many cups you must sell to cover supplies, then how many to make a $5 profit.

Steps

  1. Write down your supplies and what they cost: lemons $2, sugar $1, cups $1. Total supply cost: $4.
  2. You will sell each cup for $0.50. How many cups do you have to sell just to get your $4 back? (This is called 'breaking even.') Show the math.
  3. Now: how many cups do you have to sell to make a $5 profit on top of breaking even? Show the math.
  4. Run the stand for 30 minutes (real or pretend) and track every cup sold on a tally sheet.
  5. At the end, calculate: total revenue, minus supply cost, equals profit. Did you hit your goal?
  6. Talk about it: what could you change next time to sell more cups?
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Run a 2-day A/B price test on a lemonade stand. Track units sold, calculate revenue and profit at each price, and write a recommendation grounded in your data. Learn the word 'elasticity.'

Steps

  1. Day 1: charge $0.50 per cup for exactly 1 hour. Day 2: charge $1.00 per cup for exactly 1 hour. Same location, same time of day, same lemonade.
  2. Make a data table with columns: Day, Price, Cups Sold, Revenue, Supply Cost, Profit.
  3. Calculate revenue for each day (price x cups sold). Subtract supply cost to get profit per day.
  4. Compare: which price made more total profit? Was it the price with the most cups sold?
  5. Introduce elasticity plainly: 'Elasticity means how much demand changes when the price changes. If doubling the price cut sales in half, demand was elastic.' Did your customers behave that way?
  6. Write a one-sentence recommendation: 'I should price at $___ because ___,' using a number from your data as evidence.
  7. Stretch: predict what would happen at $0.75. Why?
  8. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
