Discover symmetry by folding paper and painting! Fold a paper in half, paint on one side, fold it closed, and open to see a matching mirror image!
Steps
- Fold a piece of paper in half. Open it back up.
- Put drops of paint on ONE side of the fold only.
- Fold the paper closed and press gently. Open it up — both sides match!
- The fold line is the 'line of symmetry.' Both sides are the same!
- Find symmetrical things around the house: a butterfly picture, your face, a heart shape.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Find lines of symmetry in shapes, letters, and objects. Draw the other half of a symmetrical picture by matching what you see.
Steps
- Fold shapes (circle, square, heart, star) in half. If both sides match when folded, it has a line of symmetry!
- Which capital letters are symmetrical? Test A, B, C, D, E, H, M, O, T, W, X by folding.
- Draw half of a butterfly on one side of a fold line. Now draw the matching other half to complete it.
- Some shapes have MORE than one line of symmetry. A square has 4! Find all the fold lines for a square and a circle.
- Go on a symmetry walk: find 5 symmetrical things outside (leaves, flowers, buildings) and draw their lines of symmetry.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Explore lines of symmetry, reflections on a grid, and rotational symmetry. Create symmetrical designs and identify all lines of symmetry in regular polygons.
Steps
- Draw 5 shapes on grid paper. Draw ALL lines of symmetry for each. How many does a regular hexagon have? (6)
- Reflection practice: draw a shape on one side of a vertical line on grid paper. Draw its mirror reflection on the other side.
- Explore rotational symmetry: cut out a square. How many ways can you rotate it so it looks the same? (4 rotational symmetries.)
- Create symmetrical art: design a mandala pattern with at least 2 lines of symmetry.
- Which shapes have rotational symmetry but NO line symmetry? Research and draw one example.
- Design a symmetrical logo or symbol using only geometric shapes. Show all lines of symmetry.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Master all three types of geometric transformations: reflections, rotations, and translations. Perform transformations on coordinate grids and create transformation art.
Steps
- Reflect shapes across the x-axis and y-axis on a coordinate grid. Write the rule: reflecting over x-axis changes (x,y) to (x,-y).
- Rotate shapes 90, 180, and 270 degrees around the origin. Plot the new coordinates.
- Translate shapes: move a triangle 3 units right and 4 units up. Write the rule: (x,y) to (x+3, y+4).
- Perform a SEQUENCE of transformations: reflect, then rotate, then translate. Plot each step.
- Create Escher-style tessellation art using repeated transformations of a single shape.
- Write coordinate rules for each transformation and verify that the shape's size and angles are preserved (congruence).

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate.
