Sort shapes by what they look like! Group circles together, squares together, and triangles together. Then sort by color and size too!

Sort shapes by what they look like! Group circles together, squares together, and triangles together. Then sort by color and size too!
Steps
- Gather or cut out shapes: circles, squares, triangles, rectangles in different colors and sizes.
- Sort all shapes into groups by type. Count how many of each shape.
- Now re-sort by color. All the red shapes together, blue shapes together.
- Now sort by size: big shapes, medium shapes, small shapes.
- Find shapes around the house: 'The clock is a circle! The door is a rectangle!'
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Classify 2D shapes by their properties: count sides and corners, look for curved or straight edges, and sort 3D shapes by faces and rolling ability.
Steps
- Gather 2D shape cutouts and 3D objects (balls, boxes, cans, cones).
- Sort 2D shapes by number of sides: 3 sides (triangles), 4 sides (quadrilaterals), 5+ sides.
- Count corners (vertices) for each shape. Do all 4-sided shapes have 4 corners?
- Sort 3D shapes: 'Which ones can roll? Which ones can stack? Which can do both?'
- Match 3D shapes to their 2D faces: a cube has square faces, a cylinder has circle faces.
- Create a shape poster with 2D shapes on one side and 3D shapes on the other, labeled with properties.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Classify shapes using geometric properties: parallel sides, perpendicular sides, right angles, and lines of symmetry. Create a classification system for quadrilaterals.
Steps
- Draw and cut out: square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, trapezoid, kite. These are all quadrilaterals (4 sides).
- Classify each by: Does it have parallel sides? How many pairs? Does it have right angles? Are all sides equal?
- Create a sorting chart: parallel sides (0, 1, or 2 pairs), right angles (yes/no), equal sides (all, some, none).
- Build a quadrilateral hierarchy: a square is a special rectangle, which is a special parallelogram.
- Classify 3D shapes by faces, edges, and vertices: cube (6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices). Do 5 shapes.
- Challenge: draw a Venn diagram sorting shapes by two properties: 'has right angles' and 'has all equal sides.' Where does a square go?

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Master geometric classification: regular vs. irregular polygons, convex vs. concave shapes, polyhedra properties, and Euler's formula for 3D shapes.
Steps
- Classify polygons as regular (all sides and angles equal) or irregular. Draw 5 examples of each.
- Classify polygons as convex (all angles less than 180 degrees) or concave (has a dent). Draw 3 of each.
- Calculate interior angle sums: triangle = 180 degrees, quadrilateral = 360 degrees, pentagon = 540 degrees. What is the formula? (n-2) x 180.
- For 5 polyhedra (cube, triangular prism, rectangular pyramid, etc.), count faces (F), vertices (V), and edges (E). Test Euler's formula: F + V - E = 2.
- Classify triangles by sides (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) AND by angles (acute, right, obtuse). Can you make all 6 combinations?
- Create a 'Shape Encyclopedia' with one page per shape family, showing properties, examples, and real-world instances.
