Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Make your first picture graph! Line up stickers or drawings in columns to show how many of each thing you have. Read your graph to answer questions.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Choose a topic: 'Fruits we like.' Draw or use stickers for apple, banana, and orange.
  2. Ask 5-8 family members (or dolls) which fruit they like best.
  3. For each vote, place a sticker in that fruit's column on a large paper.
  4. Count each column. Write the number at the top.
  5. Answer: 'Which fruit is the favorite? How many people chose banana?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Create both a picture graph and a bar graph from the same data. Learn that different graph types show the same information in different ways.

Steps

  1. Collect data: count how many of each color crayon you have in your box.
  2. Make a picture graph: draw one crayon picture for each real crayon, lined up in rows by color.
  3. Make a bar graph: label the bottom with colors, the side with numbers. Fill in bars to match your counts.
  4. Compare: both graphs show the same data! Which one is easier to read? Why?
  5. Answer 5 questions using your graphs: 'How many red crayons? How many more blue than green?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Create bar graphs, line graphs, and pictographs from real data. Choose the best graph type for each data set and explain your reasoning.

Steps

  1. Collect 3 different data sets: (1) favorite ice cream flavors of 15 people, (2) outdoor temperature at 4 different times today, (3) how many pages you read each day this week.
  2. For each data set, create the most appropriate graph: bar graph for favorites, line graph for temperature over time, pictograph for pages.
  3. Explain why you chose each graph type. What makes it the best fit?
  4. Add titles, labels, scales, and keys to each graph.
  5. Write 3 questions that can be answered from each graph. Trade with a family member to answer.
  6. Challenge: can you create a misleading version of one graph by changing the scale? Show how scales affect perception.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Create an exhibit of multiple professional-quality graphs including histograms, circle graphs, double bar graphs, and scatter plots. Analyze and present data like a real statistician.

Steps

  1. Collect a rich data set with at least 20 data points and multiple variables (survey classmates about screen time, sleep hours, and grades).
  2. Create a histogram showing the distribution of one numerical variable.
  3. Create a circle graph (pie chart) with calculated percentages for a categorical variable.
  4. Create a double bar graph comparing two groups on the same measure.
  5. Create a scatter plot showing the relationship between two numerical variables. Is there a trend?
  6. Write an 'Art Gallery' guide: for each graph, explain what it shows, what conclusions can be drawn, and what additional data would strengthen the analysis.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Read the full activity before beginning. An adult should supervise tools, heat, food, outdoor work, movement, and experiments as appropriate. Completion records that the activity was done; the child’s explanation, work sample, photo, or demonstration is stronger evidence of learning than a completion check alone.
