Steps

  1. Hide a small toy or treat somewhere in the room.
  2. Give directions: 'Take 3 big steps forward. Now turn right. Take 2 steps. Look down!'
  3. Practice following 3-4 step directions to find hidden objects.
  4. Use direction words: forward, backward, left, right, up, down.
  5. Now child hides something and gives YOU directions to find it!
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Create a simple grid treasure map on the floor. Use coordinates like (Row 2, Column 3) to mark where the treasure is hidden.

Steps

  1. Use tape to create a 5x5 grid on the floor. Label rows 1-5 and columns A-E.
  2. Hide a treasure at one intersection. Write down the coordinate (e.g., Row 3, Column B).
  3. Give the coordinate clue to your child. Can they walk to the right spot?
  4. Hide 5 treasures at different coordinates. Give all 5 clues as a list.
  5. Child hides treasures and writes coordinates for parent to find.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Use a coordinate plane to plan and run a treasure hunt. Plot clue locations as ordered pairs, calculate distances between clues, and decode the final treasure location.

Steps

  1. Create a coordinate grid from (0,0) to (10,10) on large paper or on the ground with chalk.
  2. Plot 6 clue locations as ordered pairs: Clue 1 at (2,3), Clue 2 at (7,1), etc.
  3. At each clue, hide a card with a math problem. The answer is part of the final treasure coordinate.
  4. Walk from clue to clue, solving problems and recording coordinate parts.
  5. Calculate the distance (in grid units) between consecutive clues.
  6. Solve all clues to discover the final treasure coordinate, then go find the treasure!
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Design a full coordinate plane treasure hunt using all four quadrants. Include clue solving with transformations, reflections, and distance calculations to find the treasure.

Steps

  1. Create a coordinate plane with all four quadrants (-10 to 10 on both axes) in your yard or on a large floor.
  2. Design 8 clue stations across all quadrants. Plot each on a master map.
  3. Clue types: (1) Reflect point (3,4) across the y-axis to find the next clue. (2) Translate point (-2,5) right 4 and down 3.
  4. Include a distance clue: 'The next clue is exactly 5 units from (1,2). It has a positive x and negative y. What point is it?'
  5. Use the Pythagorean theorem for diagonal distances: a clue at (0,0) and the next at (3,4). Distance = 5 units.
  6. Final challenge: all solved clues give coordinates. Plot them and connect to reveal the shape that tells where the treasure is hidden.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
