Combine halves and wholes in the kitchen! Put two half-cups together to make a whole cup. See how parts come together to make a complete amount.
Steps
- Show your child 2 half-cup measures. Pour each into a bowl. Together they make 1 whole cup!
- Use 4 quarter-cups. Pour each in one at a time, counting: 'One quarter, two quarters, three quarters, four quarters — one whole cup!'
- Break a banana in half. Put both halves on a plate. 'One half plus one half equals one whole banana!'
- Split a sandwich into 4 pieces. Eat one piece. 'We had 4 parts, now we have 3 parts left.'
- Draw a circle, color half. Draw another circle, color the other half. Together they make a whole!
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Add and take away fraction pieces using real food and measuring cups. Put 1/4 cup and 1/4 cup together to get 2/4 (or 1/2) cup!
Steps
- Use the 1/4 cup measure. Scoop rice or water once: that is 1/4. Scoop again: now you have 2/4 or 1/2 cup!
- Scoop three times with the 1/4 cup: 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 cup. One more and it is a whole cup!
- Taking away: start with 1 cup of water. Pour out 1/4 cup. How much is left? (3/4 cup)
- Draw fraction bars to show each problem: color in the parts you are adding.
- Make a simple recipe using only 1/4 cup and 1/2 cup measures. How many scoops of each did you use?
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators through real recipes. Find common denominators using measuring cup equivalents.
Steps
- Review: 1/2 cup = 2/4 cup = 4/8 cup. Prove it by measuring!
- Recipe problem: you need 1/2 cup milk and 1/4 cup milk. Convert to same denominator: 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4 cup. Measure to verify!
- Subtraction: a recipe calls for 3/4 cup flour but you already added 1/3 cup. How much more? Find common denominator: 9/12 - 4/12 = 5/12.
- Solve 5 fraction word problems from real recipes, showing common denominators and solutions.
- Mixed numbers in baking: if a recipe needs 1 3/4 cups and you have added 1 1/4 cups, how much more? (1 3/4 - 1 1/4 = 1/2 cup).
- Make a recipe and deliberately change one fraction ingredient. Does it change the result?

Perform all four fraction operations through complex recipe scaling. Multiply fractions to find parts of amounts, divide fractions to determine servings, and work with mixed numbers throughout.
Steps
- Multiply fractions in context: a recipe needs 2/3 cup of sugar. You want to make 3/4 of the recipe. How much sugar? 2/3 x 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2 cup.
- Divide fractions: you have 3 cups of flour and each batch needs 3/4 cup. How many batches? 3 / 3/4 = 3 x 4/3 = 4 batches.
- Solve 6 complex recipe problems involving multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
- Scale a recipe from 8 servings to 5 servings: multiply each ingredient by 5/8. Show all calculations.
- Create a recipe conversion chart that shows ingredient amounts for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 12 servings.
- Challenge: if you combine 1/3 of Recipe A and 2/5 of Recipe B and both recipes each make 2 1/2 cups, how many total cups of food do you have?
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
