Make simple recipes by following a pattern: 1 scoop of this, 2 scoops of that. Learn that recipes have a special pattern of amounts that makes them taste right.

How this changes by age
Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Make simple recipes by following a pattern: 1 scoop of this, 2 scoops of that. Learn that recipes have a special pattern of amounts that makes them taste right.
Steps
- Make trail mix: for every 1 scoop of raisins, add 2 scoops of cereal. That is the pattern!
- Count together as you add scoops: 1 raisin, 2 cereal, 1 raisin, 2 cereal.
- Make 3 batches following the same pattern. How many total scoops of each?
- Taste test: what happens if you add 3 scoops of cereal instead of 2? Does it taste different?
- Try another recipe pattern: 1 scoop peanut butter, 1 scoop honey. Equal amounts!
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Make recipes where the ingredient amounts follow a ratio. Learn that doubling a recipe means doubling EVERY ingredient to keep the same taste.
Steps
- Make lemonade: 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons lemon juice, 1 tablespoon sugar. This is our recipe!
- Taste it. Now make a DOUBLE batch: 2 cups water, 4 tablespoons lemon juice, 2 tablespoons sugar.
- Did it taste the same? It should! Because we doubled everything equally.
- What happens if you double only the sugar? Taste test — too sweet!
- Draw the recipe as a picture: show the amounts side by side for a single and double batch.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Explore ratios through cooking: understand ratio notation, double and halve recipes, and solve problems where one ingredient amount is known and you must find the others.
Steps
- Write a recipe as a ratio: if cookies need 2 cups flour to 1 cup sugar, the ratio is 2:1.
- Scale the recipe: for 6 cups flour, how much sugar? The ratio stays 2:1, so 3 cups sugar.
- Halve a recipe that calls for 3 cups flour, 2 eggs, and 1 1/2 cups milk. Calculate each halved amount.
- Triple a recipe. Set up a table: original amount, doubled, tripled for each ingredient.
- Ratio challenge: a paint mix uses 3 parts blue to 1 part white. How much white for 9 parts blue? For 15 parts blue?
- Make a real recipe at a scaled size. Measure carefully and see if the result tastes correct.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Master ratios and proportions through cooking: scale recipes to unusual serving sizes, convert between unit rates, and solve complex proportion problems.
Steps
- A recipe serves 4. Scale it to serve 7 by setting up proportions: 2 cups flour / 4 servings = x cups / 7 servings. Solve for x.
- Calculate unit rates: if 3 cups of mix make 12 pancakes, how many cups per pancake? How many pancakes per cup?
- Create a ratio table for a recipe: show amounts for 1x, 2x, 3x, 0.5x, and 1.5x the original recipe.
- Compare value: Brand A flour is 5 lbs for $3.49. Brand B is 8 lbs for $5.29. Which has the better unit price?
- Solve complex proportions: if 2/3 cup of mix makes 8 oz of batter, how much mix for 20 oz of batter?
- Design your own recipe with exact ratios. Write instructions so someone else could scale it to any number of servings.
