Fraction Number Line Walk
Walk along a floor number line and discover the halfway point! Find what is between 0 and 1 by stopping in the middle.
Materials and setup

Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Walk along a floor number line and discover the halfway point! Find what is between 0 and 1 by stopping in the middle.
Steps
- Use tape to make a line on the floor with 0 at one end and 1 at the other (about 6 feet apart).
- Walk from 0 to 1. Stop exactly in the middle. That spot is called 'one half' (1/2)!
- Now divide the line into 4 equal parts. Walk and stop at each part: 1/4, 2/4 (same as 1/2), 3/4.
- Place a toy at the 1/2 mark and another at the 1/4 mark. Which is closer to 0? Which is closer to 1?
- Walk from 0 to 1/2. Now walk from 1/2 to 1. Both walks are the same length!
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Create a fraction walk by dividing a long number line into halves, thirds, and fourths. Walk to different fractions and compare their positions.
Steps
- Make a long number line on the floor (0 to 1) divided into 12 equal spaces using tape.
- Mark halves: 0, 6/12 (= 1/2), 12/12 (= 1). Walk to the halfway point.
- Mark thirds: 0, 4/12 (= 1/3), 8/12 (= 2/3), 12/12. Walk to each third.
- Mark fourths: 0, 3/12 (= 1/4), 6/12 (= 1/2), 9/12 (= 3/4), 12/12. Walk to each fourth.
- Fraction walk game: call out a fraction and child walks to that position. 'Walk to 3/4!' 'Walk to 1/3!'
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Build a detailed fraction number line from 0 to 2 showing fractions with denominators up to 8. Walk to compare, order, and find equivalent fractions.
Steps
- Create a number line from 0 to 2 on the floor, at least 12 feet long.
- Mark and label fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8 on the line.
- Walk to equivalent fractions: stand on 1/2, then 2/4, then 3/6, then 4/8. They are all the same spot!
- Order 5 fractions from least to greatest by walking to each position on the line.
- Mark improper fractions and mixed numbers: walk to 5/4 (= 1 1/4) and 7/3 (= 2 1/3).
- Fraction race: two players start at 0. Roll a fraction die (or draw fraction cards). Walk that distance. First to reach 2 wins.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Create a number line showing fractions, decimals, and percentages at the same positions. Walk to practice conversions and solve fraction operations on the line.
Steps
- Build a number line from 0 to 2 with marks at every 1/8 (or every 0.125).
- Label key positions with their fraction, decimal, AND percentage: 1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, 1/2 = 0.5 = 50%, etc.
- Walk addition: start at 3/8, walk forward 1/4 (= 2/8). Where do you land? (5/8).
- Walk subtraction: start at 1 1/2, walk backward 3/4. Where do you land? (3/4).
- Play 'Closest to 1': draw fraction cards and mentally add your fractions. Try to get as close to 1 as possible without going over.
- Challenge: place negative fractions on the line. Walk to -1/2, -3/4. What does a negative fraction mean on a number line?
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
