Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Play a simple card game to practice counting and comparing numbers. Each player flips a card and the bigger number wins the round!

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Use cards with numbers 1-10 (remove face cards from a deck, or make your own).
  2. Split the deck evenly between two players.
  3. Both players flip one card at the same time.
  4. Say both numbers out loud. The bigger number wins both cards!
  5. If there is a tie, flip again. The winner of the tie round gets all 4 cards.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Develop quick number recognition skills through repeated practice

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Play Addition War! Each player flips TWO cards and adds them together. The player with the higher sum wins the round. Practice quick addition facts!

Steps

  1. Use number cards 1-10. Split the deck between players.
  2. Each player flips TWO cards and adds them together as fast as they can.
  3. Say your sum out loud: 'I have 7 plus 3, that is 10!'
  4. The higher sum wins all four cards.
  5. Play until one person has all the cards, or set a timer for 10 minutes and count who has more.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Build mental math fluency through game-based practice

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Play Multiplication War! Each player flips two cards and multiplies them. The higher product wins the round. This builds times table fluency through fun repetition.

Steps

  1. Use number cards 2-9 (four of each if possible). Split the deck between players.
  2. Both players flip two cards and multiply them. Say the equation: '6 times 8 is 48!'
  3. The higher product wins all four cards. If there is a tie, flip again.
  4. Keep a running tally of wins for each player.
  5. After the game, write down the 5 multiplication facts that were hardest for you. Practice those.
  6. Variation: use three cards and multiply the first two, then add the third.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Play advanced Multiplication War with multi-digit operations. Flip cards to create 2-digit by 1-digit products, use order of operations, and track cumulative scores.

Steps

  1. Each player flips 3 cards. Arrange two cards as a 2-digit number and multiply by the third: flip 4, 7, 3 and calculate 47 x 3 = 141.
  2. The higher product wins. Both players verify each other's mental math.
  3. Variation 'PEMDAS War': flip 4 cards and create an expression using +, -, x. Apply order of operations. Highest value wins.
  4. Score tracking: instead of collecting cards, keep a running total of your products. First to reach 1000 wins.
  5. Power round: flip 2 cards each, multiply, then the winner gets to SQUARE their product (e.g., if you won with 48, score 48^2 = 2304).
  6. After the game, calculate your average score per round and the mean product across all rounds.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
