Share treats equally among friends! Deal out crackers, grapes, or toy cookies one at a time to make sure everyone gets the same number. Is it fair?
Steps
- Set out 3 plates for 3 pretend friends (or stuffed animals).
- Give your child 6 crackers. 'Share these equally so everyone gets the same!'
- Watch them deal one cracker at a time to each plate: 1, 1, 1, then 2, 2, 2. Each friend gets 2!
- Try with 9 crackers among 3 friends. Then 8 crackers among 4 friends.
- Ask: 'What happens if we try 7 crackers among 3 friends?' Discover the leftover (remainder)!
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Run a pretend bakery where you divide baked goods equally among customers. Discover what happens when things do not divide evenly and there are remainders.
Steps
- Set up a pretend bakery with play food or paper cutout cookies, muffins, and cupcakes.
- A customer wants to share 12 cookies among 4 friends. Deal them out equally. How many each? (3)
- Another customer has 10 muffins for 3 friends. Deal them out. How many each, and how many left over? (3 each, 1 remaining)
- Practice 5 more sharing problems with different numbers of treats and friends.
- Record each problem: '15 cupcakes shared among 5 friends = 3 each with 0 left over.'
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Connect equal sharing to division equations. Solve division problems with and without remainders, and understand division as the inverse of multiplication.
Steps
- Solve 5 sharing problems and write them as division: 24 cookies / 6 friends = 4 each. Write: 24 / 6 = 4.
- Use multiplication to check: 4 x 6 = 24. Division and multiplication are inverses!
- Solve 5 division problems with remainders: 25 / 4 = 6 R1. What does the remainder mean in a real bakery?
- Word problems: 'A baker made 48 muffins. She puts 8 in each box. How many boxes does she fill?'
- Discuss: if there is a remainder in the bakery, what would you actually do? (Put extras in a partial box, eat them, etc.)
- Create 3 of your own division word problems set in a bakery. Write equations and solutions.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Master long division and interpret remainders as fractions or decimals. Solve complex division word problems and apply division to ratio and rate problems.
Steps
- Solve 6 long division problems with 3- and 4-digit dividends. Express remainders as fractions (25 / 4 = 6 1/4).
- Convert 4 division results to decimals by continuing the division past the decimal point.
- Bakery business math: if ingredients cost $45.60 and you make 24 cupcakes, what is the cost per cupcake?
- Rate problems: a baker makes 36 loaves in 4 hours. How many per hour? At that rate, how many in 7 hours?
- Solve 3 problems where the remainder matters: 'You need to transport 50 people in vans that hold 8. How many vans?' (7, not 6 R2!)
- Design a bakery price list: if each recipe batch costs X and makes Y items, calculate the price to charge for profit.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
