Steps

  1. Place 3 toys on the table. Ask: 'Is that closer to 0 toys or 5 toys?' (Closer to 5!)
  2. Try with 1 toy: 'Closer to 0 or 5?' (Closer to 0!)
  3. Make groups of 1-5 objects. For each group, decide if it is closer to 0 or closer to 5.
  4. Make a number line from 0 to 5 on the floor with tape. Place groups of objects at their position.
  5. Play 'Close to 5': grab a random handful of counters. Is it more or less than 5?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Practice rounding to the nearest 10 using a number line. Place numbers on the line and decide which ten they are closest to.

Steps

  1. Draw a number line from 0 to 50, marking every 10 (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50).
  2. Place the number 13 on the line. Is it closer to 10 or 20? (10!) So 13 rounds to 10.
  3. Place the number 27 on the line. Closer to 20 or 30? (30!) So 27 rounds to 30.
  4. Practice with 10 numbers. For each, place it on the number line and round to the nearest 10.
  5. Rule: if the ones digit is 0-4, round down. If it is 5-9, round up. Test this rule with your numbers.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  1. Round 10 numbers to the nearest 10, then to the nearest 100. Use a number line to prove each answer.
  2. Estimate before calculating: round 487 + 312 to 500 + 300 = 800. Then calculate exactly. How close was the estimate?
  3. Estimate 8 addition and subtraction problems using rounding. Then solve exactly and compare.
  4. Real-world rounding: if a store item costs $7.83, about how much is it to the nearest dollar? The nearest 50 cents?
  5. Play 'Rounding Rodeo': flip cards to make 3-digit numbers, race to round correctly to the nearest 10 and 100.
  6. Discuss: when is rounding useful in real life? List 5 situations where you would round instead of calculating exactly.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

  1. Round numbers to various places: round 45,678 to the nearest thousand, hundred, and ten.
  2. Round decimals: round 3.456 to the nearest tenth, hundredth, and whole number.
  3. Use compatible numbers for estimation: 2,347 / 6 is about 2,400 / 6 = 400. Estimate 8 division problems.
  4. Financial rounding: calculate a restaurant bill with 4 items, estimate 20% tip by rounding, and compare to the exact tip.
  5. Investigate: why do scientists use significant figures? If a measurement is 3.40 meters, why is the zero important?
  6. Challenge: estimate the answer to 5 complex expressions using rounding, then calculate exactly. What is the percent error of each estimate?
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
