Steps

  1. Make dot cards: draw 1 to 5 dots on index cards in familiar patterns (like dice faces).
  2. Flash a card for just 2 seconds. Ask: 'How many dots?' Child answers without counting.
  3. Start with 1-3 dots until they are instant, then add 4 and 5.
  4. Play with a real die: roll it and say the number as fast as you can!
  5. Use dominoes: show one half and flash-recognize the dots.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Grow your dot-flash skills to 10! Recognize dice, domino, and ten-frame patterns instantly, then break numbers apart into smaller groups you can see at a glance.

Steps

  1. Make dot cards for 1-10 in familiar patterns: dice faces for 1-6, doubles for 7-10 (like 5+2, 5+3, 5+4, 5+5).
  2. Flash a card for 2 seconds. Say the number without counting one by one.
  3. Use a ten-frame (2 rows of 5 boxes). Fill some boxes with counters and flash. Ask: 'How many filled? How many empty?'
  4. Play 'Roll Two Dice': roll two dice and say the total as fast as possible. No counting — recognize each die, then add.
  5. Dominoes match: flip a domino and say both halves and the total (e.g., '3 and 4 — that's 7!').
  6. Ending game: make a 'Flash Mob' stack of 10 cards. Time yourself flipping through and calling each number. Beat your record!
  7. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Steps

  1. Create array dot cards: 3 rows of 4 dots = 12. Flash and identify the multiplication fact.
  2. Make ten-frame flash cards. Show partially filled ten-frames for 1 second. How many dots? How many empty spaces?
  3. Double ten-frame challenge: flash two ten-frames simultaneously. Add them mentally.
  4. Play 'Subitize War': two players flip dot cards simultaneously, whoever says the total first wins both cards.
  5. Create random dot patterns (not in arrays). Estimate the quantity, then count to check. How close were you?
  6. Time trial: flip through 20 dot cards as fast as possible, saying each number. Record your best time.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Steps

  1. Scatter 50-100 small objects on a table. Estimate the quantity in 5 seconds using subitizing groups. How close are you?
  2. Develop a strategy: mentally group objects into clusters of 5 or 10, count clusters, then multiply.
  3. Create dot pattern puzzles: draw a pattern and write the expression it represents (e.g., 3 groups of 5 plus 2 = 3(5) + 2 = 17).
  4. Photograph real-world groups (parking lots, windows on buildings, tiles) and write multiplication expressions for them.
  5. Investigate: how do scientists estimate large animal populations? Research mark-recapture sampling and try it with a jar of beads.
  6. Create a 'Rapid Estimation Challenge' game with 10 images of different quantities for family members to estimate.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
