Explore measuring cups and spoons in the kitchen. Pour, fill, and dump water or rice to learn about full, empty, more, and less.

Steps

  1. Set out measuring cups (1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup) and measuring spoons with a bin of rice or water.
  2. Let your child fill the 1-cup measure and pour it into a bowl. That is 'one cup.'
  3. Now fill the 1/2 cup measure. Pour it into the 1-cup. It only fills it halfway!
  4. Ask: 'How many half cups do we need to fill the whole cup?' Count as they pour.
  5. Explore the measuring spoons: 'Which spoon holds the most? The least? Can you put them in order?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Follow a simple recipe using cups and tablespoons. Practice reading measurement markings and discover how smaller measures combine to make bigger ones.

Steps

  1. Choose a simple no-bake recipe (trail mix, fruit salad, or lemonade).
  2. Read the recipe together. Point to each measurement: '2 cups of cereal, 1/2 cup of raisins.'
  3. Child measures each ingredient carefully, leveling off dry ingredients.
  4. Explore: 'How many tablespoons in 1/4 cup?' Count them together (answer: 4).
  5. After making the recipe, double one ingredient. 'If we need 1/2 cup, what is double? 1 whole cup!'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Master kitchen measurement conversions: cups to tablespoons, teaspoons to tablespoons, and fractions of cups. Double and halve a recipe using fraction arithmetic.

Steps

  1. Memorize key conversions: 1 cup = 16 tablespoons, 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons, 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces.
  2. Choose a recipe with at least 5 ingredients. Write it out with all measurements.
  3. Rewrite the recipe doubled. If it calls for 3/4 cup, calculate: 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/4 = 1 1/2 cups.
  4. Rewrite the recipe halved. If it calls for 1/3 cup, what is half of 1/3? (1/6 cup, or about 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons).
  5. Convert 3 measurements to different units: how many tablespoons is 3/4 cup? (12 tablespoons).
  6. Make the halved or doubled version of the recipe and taste-test it against the original.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Scale recipes to unusual serving sizes using ratios and proportions. Convert between metric and customary kitchen measurements and calculate nutritional data per serving.

Steps

  1. Take a recipe that serves 4 and scale it to serve 7. Set up proportions for each ingredient and solve.
  2. Convert all measurements to metric: cups to milliliters (1 cup = 237 mL), tablespoons to mL (1 tbsp = 15 mL), ounces to grams (1 oz = 28.35 g).
  3. Calculate the cost per serving: estimate ingredient costs, divide by number of servings.
  4. Look up calories for 3 key ingredients. Calculate total recipe calories and calories per serving.
  5. Create a professional recipe card with both customary and metric measurements, cost per serving, and calories per serving.
  6. Challenge: if you only have a 1/3 cup measure and a teaspoon, how would you measure 3/4 cup? Show your math.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
