Pre-K (ages 3–4)

Use your own body to measure things! How many footsteps across the room? How many hand widths is the table? Discover that your body is a measuring tool.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Walk heel-to-toe across the room, counting each step. How many feet long is the room?
  2. Measure the table using hand widths. Place one hand down, then the next, counting as you go.
  3. Measure a doorway using arm spans. How many arm spans wide is it?
  4. Compare: the room is more footsteps than hand widths because feet are bigger than hands!
  5. Draw yourself and label your measuring tools: feet, hands, arms.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Count units consistently while measuring
  • Understand that bigger units mean fewer are needed to measure

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Measure objects using body parts, then measure the same objects with a ruler. Compare results and learn why standard tools give more reliable answers.

Steps

  1. Measure 5 large objects using your arm span (fingertip to fingertip). Record each.
  2. Measure the same 5 objects using a tape measure in feet or meters. Record those numbers.
  3. Have a parent measure the same objects with their arm span. Are the numbers different from yours?
  4. Make a chart showing all three measurements side by side for each object.
  5. Discuss: 'Whose arm span measurements are bigger? Why? Which measurement method is most fair?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Measure your body parts precisely, then use those known measurements as estimation tools. Create a personal measurement reference card you can carry anywhere.

Steps

  1. Measure these body parts with a ruler or tape measure: hand span, foot length, arm span, height, elbow to fingertip (cubit).
  2. Record each measurement in both inches and centimeters.
  3. Use your known measurements to estimate 8 objects without a ruler: 'My hand span is 6 inches, and this book is about 2 hand spans, so it is about 12 inches.'
  4. Check your estimates with a ruler. Calculate the difference between estimate and actual.
  5. Create a pocket-sized reference card with your body measurements for quick estimating.
  6. Research: ancient civilizations used body measurements (cubits, feet, spans). How close are your measurements to the historical units?
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Investigate the mathematical relationships between body measurements. Explore ratios, proportions, and the concept of scale as it relates to human body proportions.

Steps

  1. Measure 8 body dimensions: height, arm span, foot length, hand span, head circumference, cubit, pace length, and thumb width.
  2. Calculate ratios: arm span to height, foot length to height, hand span to foot length. Express each as a fraction and decimal.
  3. Compare your ratios to Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man proportions (arm span should equal height). How close are you?
  4. Collect the same measurements from 3 other people. Do the ratios stay similar even though the actual measurements differ?
  5. Create a scale drawing of yourself using a ratio of 1:10. Calculate what each measurement should be in the drawing.
  6. Write an analysis: are human body proportions truly consistent across different people? Support with your data.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
