Measure objects around the house using non-standard units like paper clips, crayons, and your own feet. Discover how long things are by lining up objects end to end.

Steps

  1. Gather paper clips, crayons, and blocks as measuring tools.
  2. Choose 5 objects to measure: a book, a shoe, a stuffed animal, a pillow, a table edge.
  3. Line up paper clips end to end along each object. Count how many paper clips long it is.
  4. Record results by drawing each object and writing the number next to it.
  5. Compare: 'Which object was the most paper clips long? Which was the fewest?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Measure objects using both non-standard units and a ruler. Compare the results and discover why standard units are important for clear communication.

Steps

  1. Measure 5 objects using your hand span. Record how many hand spans each one is.
  2. Now measure the same 5 objects with a ruler in inches. Record those numbers.
  3. Compare: did the hand span number match the inches number? Why are they different?
  4. Have a parent measure the same objects with THEIR hand span. Are the results different from yours?
  5. Discuss: 'Why do we need rulers? What if everyone used their own hands to measure?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Use rulers, tape measures, and yardsticks to measure objects in inches, feet, centimeters, and meters. Convert between units and estimate before measuring.

Steps

  1. Choose 8 objects of varying sizes around the house and yard.
  2. Before measuring each one, write an estimate of its length in inches or centimeters.
  3. Measure each object in both inches and centimeters. Record in a two-column table.
  4. Convert: if the table is 36 inches long, how many feet is that? If a pencil is 19 cm, how many mm?
  5. Calculate the difference between your estimate and the actual measurement for each object.
  6. Rank all 8 objects from shortest to longest using your centimeter measurements.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Conduct a measurement investigation comparing customary and metric systems. Measure to fractional precision, convert between systems, and analyze measurement error.

Steps

  1. Select 10 objects and measure each to the nearest 1/8 inch and nearest millimeter.
  2. Create a conversion chart: convert all inch measurements to centimeters (1 inch = 2.54 cm) and compare to your direct metric measurements.
  3. Calculate the percent error between your converted and direct metric measurements for each object.
  4. Measure one object 5 times independently. Calculate the mean, range, and discuss measurement precision.
  5. Research: why does the US use customary units while most countries use metric? Write a paragraph arguing for one system.
  6. Design a measurement challenge for a family member: hide 5 objects and give only measurements as clues to find them.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
