Steps
- Fill a clear jar with 10-20 small objects (buttons, cereal pieces, blocks).
- Ask your child: 'How many do you think are in the jar?' Write down the guess.
- Count together. How close was the guess?
- Repeat with 3 different jars with different amounts.
- Talk about strategies: 'Was it more than 10? Less than 20?'
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Steps
- Estimate how many objects are in 5 different containers, then count to check.
- Use benchmarks: show what 10 looks like, then estimate if a group is 'about 10,' 'more than 10,' or 'less than 10.'
- Estimate the length of 5 objects in inches, then measure. How close were you?
- Estimate which object is heavier, then check with a balance.
- Track your estimates and actuals. Are you getting closer?
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Estimate sums, differences, products, and measurements using rounding and benchmarks. Develop 'reasonableness checking' as a math habit.
Steps
- Round to estimate: 487 + 312 is about 500 + 300 = 800. Do 8 estimation problems.
- Estimate measurements: guess the length of your driveway in feet, the weight of a watermelon in pounds, the time to walk to the mailbox in seconds. Then measure/time.
- For 5 math problems, estimate the answer FIRST, then calculate exactly. Compare.
- Estimate grocery costs: given 5 items with prices, round each and estimate the total before adding exactly.
- Practice 'Is my answer reasonable?' for 5 completed problems: if an answer seems too big or small, find the error.
- Play 'Estimation Challenge' with a family member: who can estimate closest without going over?
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Master sophisticated estimation: Fermi problems, order of magnitude, compatible numbers for division, and estimation in complex real-world scenarios.
Steps
- Solve 3 Fermi problems (How many tennis balls would fill this room? How many words in a book?). Show your estimation reasoning step by step.
- Use compatible numbers for division estimation: 2,347 / 6 is about 2,400 / 6 = 400. Do 5 problems.
- Estimate with percentages: about 15% of 789 is about 15% of 800 = 120. Do 5 problems.
- Order of magnitude: is the answer closer to 10, 100, 1000, or 10000? Categorize 8 calculations.
- Real-world estimation challenge: estimate the cost of repainting your bedroom (estimate area of walls, paint coverage per gallon, price per gallon).
- Reflect: when is estimation more useful than exact calculation? Write 3 examples.
