Sort objects into groups and make simple picture graphs. Answer questions about 'most' and 'fewest' from your graphs.

Steps

  1. Sort a bag of mixed items (buttons, crayons, coins) by color.
  2. Line up each group in a row. Which group has the most? The fewest?
  3. Create a picture graph: draw one picture for each item in a row.
  4. Count each row and write the number.
  5. Ask and answer: 'How many red ones? Are there more blue or green?'
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Collect data through a survey and display it in a bar graph. Ask and answer questions about the data.

Steps

  1. Choose a survey question: 'What is your favorite fruit?' Ask 10 people.
  2. Record answers using tally marks.
  3. Create a bar graph: label the bottom with choices, the side with numbers.
  4. Color in bars to match the number of votes for each choice.
  5. Answer 5 questions about your graph: What was most popular? How many chose bananas? How many more chose apples than grapes?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Create and interpret multiple types of graphs: bar, line, and pictographs. Calculate mean, find range, and make predictions from data.

  1. Collect data: measure the temperature at the same time each day for 5 days.
  2. Display your data in 3 ways: a data table, a bar graph, and a line graph.
  3. Which graph type best shows the temperature trend? Explain why.
  4. Calculate the mean (average) temperature for the week.
  5. Find the range (highest minus lowest temperature).
  6. Based on your data, predict tomorrow's temperature and explain your reasoning.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Analyze complex data sets: calculate mean, median, mode, and range. Create stem-and-leaf plots, choose appropriate graph types, and identify misleading graphs.

Steps

  1. Given a data set of 15 numbers, calculate the mean, median, mode, and range.
  2. Create a stem-and-leaf plot for a data set and describe what it reveals about the data distribution.
  3. Analyze 3 graphs and determine which are misleading. Explain what makes them misleading (scale manipulation, missing labels, cherry-picked data).
  4. Design a survey, collect data from at least 15 people, and choose the most appropriate graph type to display results. Justify your choice.
  5. Write 5 conclusions supported by your data and 2 questions that would require more data to answer.
  6. Create a data presentation with graphs, calculations, and written analysis.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
