Practice quick counting and simple addition in your head. Use fingers and mental images to solve problems without writing.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Flash a number of fingers. Have your child say the number as fast as they can.
  2. Show a group of objects briefly, then cover them. How many were there?
  3. Practice 'one more' and 'one less' with numbers 1-10.
  4. Play 'finger math': hold up 3 fingers on one hand and 2 on the other. How many altogether?
  5. Count backwards from 10 to 1 together. Blast off like a rocket!
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  • Add and subtract 1 mentally
  • Count forward and backward within 10

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Build mental math speed with doubles facts, making 10, and adding/subtracting within 20 without writing anything down.

Steps

  1. Practice doubles facts (1+1, 2+2, ... 10+10) until they are automatic.
  2. Use doubles to solve near-doubles: 6+7 = 6+6+1 = 13.
  3. Practice 'making 10' mentally: 8+5 = 8+2+3 = 10+3 = 13.
  4. Play 'Around the World' math: flash cards, answer as fast as you can.
  5. Count by 2s, 5s, and 10s out loud as fast as you can.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Develop mental math strategies: compensation, breaking apart, friendly numbers, and estimation. Race against your own best times.

Steps

  1. Learn compensation: 49 + 28 = 50 + 28 - 1 = 77. Practice with 5 problems.
  2. Learn breaking apart: 67 + 25 = 67 + 20 + 5 = 92. Practice with 5 problems.
  3. Use friendly numbers for subtraction: 83 - 47 = 83 - 50 + 3 = 36. Practice 5 problems.
  4. Time yourself solving 20 mixed addition and subtraction problems mentally. Record your time.
  5. Practice multiplication facts with mental math: use doubling (6x8 = 6x4x2 = 24x2 = 48).
  6. Try again tomorrow and try to beat your time.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

  1. Multiply by 5 mentally: multiply by 10, then divide by 2. Practice 10 problems.
  2. Calculate 10%, 20%, 25%, 50% mentally using fraction equivalents. Apply to 8 real prices.
  3. Estimate products of large numbers: 48 x 32 is about 50 x 30 = 1500. Do 5 estimates, then check with exact calculation.
  4. Mental division strategies: 144 / 6 = 144 / 2 / 3 = 72 / 3 = 24. Practice 5 problems.
  5. Challenge: compute 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication mentally using place value (243 x 4 = 800 + 160 + 12 = 972).
  6. Compete in a family mental math challenge. Track scores over multiple rounds.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
