Steps

  1. Find 5 objects of different lengths. Put them in order from shortest to longest.
  2. Hold two objects, one in each hand. Which feels heavier? Which is lighter?
  3. Fill two different containers with water or rice. Which holds more?
  4. Use a non-standard unit (like your hand or a crayon) to measure 3 things. How many 'crayons long' is the table?
  5. Draw 3 objects in order from smallest to biggest.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Measure length using inches and centimeters. Compare weights on a balance scale. Measure capacity with cups.

  1. Use a ruler to measure 5 objects in inches. Record each measurement.
  2. Measure the same 5 objects in centimeters. Are the numbers bigger or smaller? Why?
  3. Use a balance scale (or a hanger balance) to compare the weight of 3 pairs of objects.
  4. Measure water using a measuring cup. How many cups fill a bowl? A pot?
  5. Estimate before measuring: guess the length, then measure to check.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Measure in customary and metric units. Convert between units, measure to the nearest fraction, and solve measurement word problems.

  1. Measure 5 objects to the nearest 1/4 inch and to the nearest centimeter.
  2. Convert measurements: 3 feet = ? inches, 2 kilograms = ? grams, 5 liters = ? milliliters.
  3. Measure the perimeter of 3 rooms in your house using a tape measure. Record in feet and meters.
  4. Solve 5 measurement word problems involving addition and subtraction of measurements.
  5. Estimate the weight of 5 household objects in ounces or grams, then check with a kitchen scale.
  6. Create a measurement reference chart: show common items that are about 1 inch, 1 foot, 1 meter, etc.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Master measurement conversions across systems, solve complex measurement problems, and understand the relationship between units.

  1. Convert between customary and metric: 1 inch is about 2.54 cm, 1 kg is about 2.2 lbs. Convert 10 measurements.
  2. Solve multi-step problems: A recipe calls for 3/4 cup of flour. If you triple the recipe, how many cups do you need?
  3. Calculate with measurement formulas: find the volume of 3 containers by measuring dimensions and computing L x W x H.
  4. Plan a garden: given a 20 ft x 15 ft space, design sections with specific areas. Calculate the total perimeter of fencing needed.
  5. Investigate: How are temperature scales related? Convert 5 temperatures between Fahrenheit and Celsius using the formula.
  6. Create a unit conversion cheat sheet covering length, weight, volume, and temperature.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
