Pre-K (ages 3–4)
Discover HALVES! Cut things in half: an apple, a piece of paper, a ball of clay, a sandwich. Learn that two halves always make a whole. Quarters and other fractions come later — today is just halves.
Steps
- Show a whole apple. Cut it in half with a child-safe knife (parent helps). 'Two halves — one whole apple!'
- Hand the child a piece of paper. 'Fold it so the two sides match exactly.' Open it: two equal halves.
- Roll a ball of playdough. Cut it in half. Roll each half into a smaller ball. 'Are the two balls the same size? Then they are halves.'
- Halves hunt: find 5 things you can cut, fold, or share into two equal halves (a sandwich, a banana, a square of toast).
- Practice the words: WHOLE (the full thing) and HALF (one of two equal parts). Avoid quarters/thirds today — just halves and wholes.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)
Master HALVES across many materials: paper folding in half, halving numbers, halving sets of objects. Save quarters and thirds for the Pizza Fractions activity.
Steps
- Fold 5 different paper shapes (circle, square, rectangle, heart, triangle) exactly in half. Show that each folds match perfectly.
- Halve sets of objects: 8 buttons split into two equal piles = 4 in each. Try with 6, 10, and 12.
- Halve numbers 2-20 in your head. Write them as facts: half of 10 is 5.
- Notice: ODD numbers (like 7) cannot be split into two whole-number halves. Discover why.
- Draw 'half pictures': fold a paper in half, draw on one side, then mirror the drawing on the other side.
- Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)
Understand fraction concepts: numerator, denominator, equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions. Use fraction strips and number lines.
Steps
- Make fraction strips: cut paper strips into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and eighths.
- Use strips to find equivalent fractions: lay 2/4 on top of 1/2. Are they the same length?
- Place fractions on a number line from 0 to 1. Where does 1/3 go? Where does 3/4 go?
- Compare 5 pairs of fractions using >, <, or =. Use fraction strips to prove your answer.
- Solve 5 word problems involving fractions of a group (1/3 of 12 cookies = ? cookies).
- Design a pizza with 8 slices. Color different toppings and write what fraction has each topping.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)
Master fraction operations: add, subtract, multiply fractions and mixed numbers. Convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
Steps
- Add and subtract 5 pairs of fractions with unlike denominators by finding common denominators.
- Multiply 5 fraction problems, including mixed numbers (convert to improper fractions first).
- Convert between forms: write 3/4 as a decimal (0.75) and a percentage (75%). Do this for 8 different fractions of your choice.
- Solve 4 real-world problems involving fraction operations (recipes doubled, fabric cut into pieces, etc.).
- Order 8 numbers that mix fractions, decimals, and percentages from least to greatest.
- Explain in writing: why is 1/2 the same as 0.5 and 50%? Use a visual model to prove it.
- In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
