Meet the coins! Learn to identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. Sort real or play coins and practice naming their values.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Spread out a handful of mixed coins (real or play money).
  2. Introduce each coin by name and value: penny (1 cent), nickel (5 cents), dime (10 cents), quarter (25 cents).
  3. Sort coins into 4 groups by type. Count how many of each.
  4. Play 'Find the Coin': describe a coin and have your child find it.
  5. Put coins in order from least value to most value.
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Count groups of coins to find their total value. Set up a pretend store and practice buying items with exact change.

Steps

  1. Practice skip counting by 5s (nickels) and 10s (dimes) to count coin groups.
  2. Count mixed groups of coins: start with the highest value coin and add on.
  3. Set up a pretend store with 5 items priced under 50 cents.
  4. Give your child a pile of coins. Can they pay the exact price for each item?
  5. Make change: if an item costs 15 cents and you pay with a quarter, how much change do you get?
  6. Tell a grown-up one thing that surprised you.

  2. Compare prices from a pretend catalog: which item is the best deal? How much more does item A cost than item B?
  3. Given a $20 budget, choose items from a list and calculate if you can afford them all. What's your change?
  4. Write 5 money word problems for a family member to solve.
  5. Calculate sales tax at 10%: if an item costs $4.50, what's the total with tax?
  6. Keep a spending log for one real errand and calculate the total spent.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Master advanced money concepts: calculating discounts and sales tax, comparing unit prices, creating budgets, and understanding profit/loss.

Steps

  1. Calculate 5 discounts: a $60 item at 25% off, a $45 item at 30% off, etc. What's the sale price?
  2. Compare unit prices: which is a better deal, a 12-oz box for $3.60 or a 16-oz box for $4.48?
  3. Create a monthly budget for a pretend allowance of $50: savings (20%), spending, and giving categories.
  4. Run a pretend business: if supplies cost $15 and you sell 20 items at $2 each, what's your profit?
  5. Research: compare the price of 5 grocery items at two different stores. Which store is cheaper overall?
  6. Calculate compound scenarios: buy 3 items with a 15% discount, then add 8% sales tax.
  7. In one sentence, tell a parent or sibling what surprised you today.
