- We begin the body at the smallest level first: the human body has trillions of cells — far more than there are stars in our galaxy! Cells are the smallest living units in your body. Without cells, there is no you.
- Different cells do different jobs: red blood cells carry oxygen, muscle cells help you move, nerve cells send messages, and skin cells form a protective layer. There are about 200 different types of cells in your body. Each one is built for its job.

- We begin the body with its smallest living unit: cells are the basic unit of life, and all living things are made of one or more cells. This idea is called "cell theory," first stated in the 1830s. Most of your cells are too small to see without a microscope — a single drop of blood has about 5 million red blood cells.
- The nucleus contains DNA and controls cell activities. DNA is the instruction book for every cell, telling it which proteins to make and when. Almost every cell in your body has the same complete set of DNA, but different cells read different parts of it.
- Mitochondria perform cellular respiration to produce ATP (energy) using glucose (sugar) and oxygen. They take fuel from your food and oxygen from your lungs and turn them into the energy your cells need. Mitochondria have their own tiny DNA, separate from the cell's main nucleus.

- We begin the body at the smallest living scale: eukaryotic cells (animals, plants, fungi) have a membrane-bound nucleus, while prokaryotic cells (bacteria, archaea) do not. Eukaryotic cells are typically 10–100 times bigger than prokaryotic ones. The first eukaryotic cells appeared about 2 billion years ago when one prokaryote engulfed another — the engulfed one became the mitochondria.
- The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a network of folded membranes inside the cell that folds proteins (rough ER, which has ribosomes attached) and processes lipids and detoxifies poisons (smooth ER). The ER often makes up more than half of all the membrane surface inside a cell. It connects directly to the nuclear membrane.
- The Golgi apparatus packages and ships proteins to their destinations inside or outside the cell — like a cellular post office. Italian scientist Camillo Golgi discovered it in 1898 using a special silver stain. Proteins enter one side as raw output from the ER and leave the other side wrapped in vesicles, addressed to their destination.
