Steps

  1. Use playdough to build a mountain, a hill, and a valley on a tray.
  2. Pour water around your mountains to make oceans, rivers, and lakes.
  3. Learn geography words: mountain (tall land), island (land surrounded by water), river (flowing water).
  4. Find these features in picture books or maps.
  5. Draw a picture of your favorite landform and label it.

  • Use geography vocabulary to describe landforms

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Learn about continents and oceans. Study different landforms (desert, forest, tundra, mountain) and the animals that live there.

Steps

  1. Learn the 7 continents and 5 oceans. Find each on a globe or map.
  2. Sing a continents and oceans song to help remember them.
  3. Study 4 biomes: desert (hot, dry), forest (lots of trees), tundra (cold, frozen), ocean (underwater world).
  4. For each biome, draw the landscape and 2 animals that live there.
  5. Create a world map and color each continent a different color. Label the oceans.

  • Associate animals with their habitat biomes

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Study physical geography: tectonic plate activity, erosion, landform creation, and how geography affects human settlement. Create detailed maps.

Steps

  1. Research how landforms are created: mountains (plate collisions), valleys (erosion), volcanoes (magma), canyons (water erosion).
  2. Study a topographic map of your state. Identify mountains, rivers, plains, and coast (if applicable).
  3. Investigate why cities grow where they do: near water, flat land, natural resources. Map 5 major US cities and explain their locations.
  4. Build a 3D topographic model of a landform using cardboard layers, clay, or papier-mache.
  5. Create a detailed map of an imaginary island with at least 6 different landforms, a compass rose, and a scale.
  6. Write a geography report: choose a unique landform (Grand Canyon, Amazon Rainforest, Sahara Desert) and explain how it was formed.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Analyze the relationship between physical geography and human activity. Study climate zones, resource distribution, and how geography shapes history and economics.

  1. Map and analyze climate zones: how does latitude, altitude, and proximity to oceans affect climate?
  2. Study how geography shaped history: why did ancient civilizations form along rivers? How did mountain ranges create natural borders?
  3. Research resource distribution: map where key natural resources (oil, water, fertile soil, minerals) are located globally. How does this affect world power dynamics?
  4. Investigate a geographic challenge: water scarcity, rising sea levels, or desertification. How is it affecting a specific region?
  5. Create a GIS-style layered map showing physical features, population density, and economic activity for one region.
  6. Write an analysis: how does geography determine a country's economic strengths and challenges?
