Learn what maps are! Follow a simple treasure map around your house or yard. Maps show us where things are.

Difficulty 1 of 3

Steps

  1. Draw a simple map of your bedroom: where is the bed? The door? The window?
  2. Create a treasure hunt: draw a map with an X marking where you hid a treat.
  3. Give the map to a family member and see if they can find the treasure!
  4. Practice direction words: up, down, left, right, near, far.
  5. Look at a real map together. Point to roads, water, and buildings.

Learning objectives

  • Understand that maps represent real places from above
  • Follow simple directional instructions using a map
  • Use position words: near, far, left, right

Kindergarten (ages 5–6)

Learn map basics: compass rose (N, S, E, W), symbols, and simple legends. Create a map of your school or park with a legend.

Steps

  1. Learn the compass rose: North is up, South is down, East is right, West is left.
  2. Practice: 'Walk 5 steps North. Turn East and walk 3 steps.' Can you follow directions?
  3. Learn map symbols: blue = water, green = parks, red lines = roads.
  4. Create a map of your backyard or a nearby park with symbols and a legend.
  5. Add a compass rose to your map pointing in the correct directions.

Early elementary (ages 6–8)

Master intermediate map skills: grid coordinates, map scale, physical vs. political maps, and latitude/longitude introduction.

Steps

  1. Learn to use grid coordinates: find locations on a map using letter-number pairs (B3, D7).
  2. Understand map scale: if 1 inch = 10 miles, how far is it from city A to city B?
  3. Compare physical maps (showing landforms) and political maps (showing borders and cities).
  4. Introduction to latitude and longitude: latitude lines run east-west (like ladder rungs), longitude lines run north-south.
  5. Find your city's approximate latitude and longitude. Find 5 other cities and their coordinates.
  6. Create a detailed map of an imaginary country with grid coordinates, a scale, legend, compass rose, and labeled features.

Upper elementary (ages 8–10)

Master advanced cartography: latitude/longitude precision, projection types, thematic maps, and GIS concepts. Analyze how maps can inform and mislead.

Steps

  1. Master latitude and longitude: locate 10 world cities using precise coordinates. Plot them on a blank world map.
  2. Study map projections: Mercator, Robinson, and Peters. How does each distort size and shape? Why does projection choice matter?
  3. Create 3 thematic maps of the same region showing different data: population density, climate, and economic activity.
  4. Analyze how maps can mislead: how do color choices, scale, and projection affect interpretation?
  5. Use coordinate geometry to plan a route between 5 cities. Calculate total distance using map scale.
  6. Research GIS (Geographic Information Systems): how do modern mapmakers layer different types of data? Design a multi-layer map concept.
